If it's just to copyright your work it is automatically protected under copyright laws as soon as you put it online.

well we are having a problem with another site claiming some of the text on our site belongs to them.

So I called the web designers of the other site and discussed the issue with them. It was a bunch of kids playing grown up! So i figured I would have our conetent secured by a copyright ...

Obtaining an actual copyright certificate won't help you much in these cases.
Your material is already protected.

Send them a C&D letter and report them to their service provider.

Your in luck. Any content you wrote is already copyrighted. If you want to prove that, or sue someone for stealing it file a copyright registration. If you know you wrote it you probably don't need to worry about someone else claiming they did.
