If you talk how to write them without special chars (also without using IDN) then they are replaced as following:

ä = ae
ü = ue

It would be nice to have both the
ä /ae
ü / ue
Versions, but I wouldnt worry about it unless its a totaly killer keyword.
a and u without the little dots is a misspelling and worthless.

Hard to answer, but if, i would say ä

- Because :imho: You have german word and most users that would type that have those chars on keyboard.

(on the other side ... most users search domain on google
many, dont see difference in addressbar / searchbox )

Another advice:
There are valuable words out there that are written with two

- ä or
- ö or
- ü.

Make sure that both letters are either IDN or non-IDN. Otherwise they are worth the regfee only.

I noticed that places like munich prefer Muenchen over München same for Duesseldorf and Koeln.
