Two more ccTLD's want to open up registrations

I read two news stories today of more ccTLD's that have their eye on getting more public registrations.

.pw, the domain of the pacific islands of Palau is going to promote it as "Personal Website" for individuals and communities. They already have it in beta testing stage.

Looks like .cc/.tm/.ws/.tv/.la will have another memeber to their non-country country codes.

It also appears .ie, the ccTLD of Ireland is looking to open up registrations in the next 18 months. I don't know if this would be for general world use or just more open like .us did.

If they all start doing this, ccTLD's will lose their intended meaning just like most of the global TLD's have done.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.US domains.US domains
.PW and .IE

I can't see either one of these being very attractive.

".IE" has been around for a while though (" ... is looking to open up registrations"), I believe ... whereas this ".PW" (" ... in beta testing stage") seems to be along the lines of ".WS", ".CC", ".TK" and the rest of the lowlies, IMHO.

.pw sounds like another .ws in the making.

Except in my younger single days, PW stood for something synonymous with "henpecked", that ended with "Whipped" on which I'll refrain from posting in detail. :]

I also wonder where they got "PW" out of "Palau" in the first place. PA for Panama and PL for Poland are taken by other countries, but PU should have been available.

People are hardly buying .WS which is promoted as generic for WebSite that could "potentially" be used for personal or commercial sites. I think by focusing PW as "Personal Website" is almost as poor a stragegy as the .name strategy was in the beginning. Wouldn't "Professional Website" seem to make better marketing sense? Permanant, Profitable, Portable, Packaged, or Performance would all seem to be a better marketing plan to me than personal.

Although, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's probably just a duck. At least for now, people who buy domains pretty much know a two character TLD is a country code and not a Global TLD no matter how you market it.

It would appear the ,pw registry is really pushing the spam free email angle with this extention. How end users gobble it up remains to be seen. They've got alot of marketing to do before they can gain any momentum, but the anti spam theme might work....Lord knows endusers are up in arms about being inundated with advert garbage in their inboxes.

The .pw registry doesn't actually allow domain registrations, I found out, but rather will allow someone to pay for the rights to sell email addresses at a .pw domain. Confused yet?
