Tutorial for Domain newbies.
Here is so much people asking about what is worth to register, what kind of words, how to find them how to check if they are good names or not, how to predict price on domains, how to avoid trademark registrations, etc so I decided to write some FAQs on this topic. In same time i was newbie several months ago, so it is always better to check if i am doing everything right. So opinions are welcome.
1. Which extension is better to buy?
In general according to domain sales COM has registered 43,216,080 domains, which is almost 7 times more than NET, and 13-14 times more than ORG INFO and BIZ.
When I am browsing domains to buy, first of all I look for COM. If it is taken I check other extensions. For resale I look at other extensions to buy, only if COM is somewhere parked and listed for sale. This is some kind of guaranty, that I will not face a trademark problem from COM owner.
2. How to check if domain name I am willing to buy is good?
Now the question is what we are considering under “good”. I would say, that domain name is good, if words combinations causing high public interest.
If domain purchase made for resale “good” have to met several criteria’s.
a/ I have to be sure, that people, while they are browsing internet, looking for words combination which contain my domain name.
This search can be done by typing your words combination in http://inventory.overture.com (OVT) . I would only buy domain if OVT result is high. Under high I understand more than 1000 searches done for this particular exact name combination curing current month.
b/ I have to be sure, that domain name has high result also in google or yahoo search and even better if SEO search will show some back links. More backlinks- better domain.
c/ it is always better to buy used/dropped/deleted domain, when register brand new name. More chances it will be already listed in Search Engines, more chances that it already have some natural traffic.
d/ I cannot be absolutely sure, that domain I am buying is good, but by making research and adding some information together, I can collect some clues to make sure that this name can have some value or not. I don’t trust electronic evaluation programs, but one of them is giving very approximate idea on domain value, if I am answering questions really honest. I use this one http://www.urlbuyers.com/valuation.cfm . When ovt result says that this word combination was used 1200 times this month, when I also see 500,000 links in google using same “exact phrase”, and when I see, that this domain name has some backlinks, I can believe that electronic appraisal, which says that domain has $70 value. But when it says that my domain worth $10,000, and where is very low additional numbers (like OVT 5, or google 20,000 links etc), it mean that I was not honestly answering questions during electronic evaluation.
3 How to know if domain trademarked.
First of all name need to be checked at http://uspto.gov database.
But be very careful, because if name is not there, does not mean you will not meat trademark problem in future.
4. Which words are best sellers?
This is common question for Namepros newbies, and according to the most answers general top sellers are: Poker, Casino, Games, Adult, Money, Business, Design, Real Estates, Hosting related domains.
5. Is it ok to add e, e-, or i, i- upfront of domain name?
"e" represents "electronic" or "i" represents "internet", so if your business is related of that nature then its perfect. But do not register it, if domain does not make any sense with it. Like ehardwood.
6. Is it ok to add The?
I think same is with “The”.
7. Where is cheaper to register domain?
Godaddy.com is the best and cheapest solution today for domain registration right now, because it is a company, which grows extremely fast.
8. What to do after domain is registered?
Where is only one right answer. Develop it. Whatever reason you put under buying domain (resale or keep it for your own purposes) it need development. Under development I understand some way to grow interest to your domain. Even if you just parked it somewhere, people need to know about your domain and visit it. Advertise it. Buy hosting and make a web site, even simple one page is better than nothing.
After developing domain it is always good idea to apprise it. Where is lots of professional appraisals at Namepros always very helpful. It will not hurt to ask them about value.
You are welcome to add more advises here.
P.S. In no ways i am affiliated with links i listed in the topic.
