The strange-looking world map, produced by UK domain registry Nominet, shows just how total its dominance is. Tokelau is barely visible on standard world maps, but here it becomes a huge area in the southern Pacific. Russia and America, by comparison, shrink to relative obscurity.

Unlike most domains, registering a .tk address doesn't cost anything. Registrations that remain unused for a certain period of time are replaced with ad pages, with paid .tk domains letting people take legal ownership...

While you may be able to "register" a .tk for free at freenom, it's subject to a number of terms and limitations:

1. You do not have any legal rights to your registered domain name (ie. you don't own it). Which means you cannot transfer it.
2. 1, 2, and 3 character domain names cannot be registered for free. Neither can domain names they determine to be "special", which includes things like dictionary words.
3. You must have an existing website that will be served for your domain name. You cannot park any free registered domain name.
4. The content of your website cannot contain certain subject matter. For example, for the .gq/.cf TLD's, your website cannot contain "vulgar statements [or] rudeness", among other things.

If a domain violates any of these terms, it is replaced by a Sedo ad page, and no beforehand warning is given.

Funny, they located .ms (Montserrat) in Europe, while in fact is a caribbean island. This error is caused because in Catalonia (where .ms is placed on the map) there is a mountain called Montserrat.

i would stay away from freenom.
i've an issue transferring domains so i've opened several ticket with them and i got 1 answer in 10 days.. then they disappear. I was thinking to be the only one but if you see their facebook page..................
i try a lot of registrars with no fear as i put my worse name on those i try for first time.
I think i'll leave freenom out of my registrar choices.
be careful with them, this is my advice.. btw still waiting for a reply from them (ticket and support mail)

Not for the free ones - my wholesale cost is around US$7-8 so if someone needed a hack or like just really wanted some phrase/word/name and tk was the only ccTLD available, I don't know if a paid domain would be bad. Maybe. They were known for spam and phishing for years.

They have Premium pricing on 2 and 3 character - 2 char $1000, 3 char $500 (I'm guessing per year)

Very interesting graph otherwise. I like ccTLDs and I am very surprised at the total regs for some countries. Some make total sense because they have high restrictions,

I own ~ 0.29545 % of AL : grin :

The .bg (Bulgaria) is a sad story of highly over-regulaton. In order to register something.bg you have to proof that it is either your own persnal name or the name of a registered brand you on (written exactly that way) and still costs as 5-10 .coms. It is not that uncommon if you really want something to specially register a company with such a name.
Most common people and enterpreneurs just register somethinginbulgarian.com People are used.

Interesting. So how do we register these 'free' domain names?
