Hi,

clearly i'm a newbie in this game. i was wondering whether there is any method in thinking up domain names to sell or is it just luck of the draw what people want to buy at the time?

i have looked at some tool on overture.com, but i need someone to clarify...does a search on there with a larger number mean the domain will be more sucessful and fetch a higher price?

i bought marketflux.co.uk the other day, but now i'm hearing .co.uk domains arent worth much, so maybe i have wasted my money there?

any comments welcome :)

cheers.

Always look for new concepts/images, new changes, and new/shifting tides among daily news, daily lives and industry/technology developments... Keep searching, considering and creating...there are already some good posts here on Namepros talking about the domain matters you concern.

It's not easy to dig up a good domain...the bad news is almost all good .Com/.Net... domains are taken already---the good news is many of the taken good domains are 'static' ones---you will have many chances to take good 'mobile' domains generating from various news, peoples' lives, active business/tech developments, new changes, new/shifting tides...there are new things often appearing on the planet...you can create good .Com/.Net/.Org...domains for them...please remember that .Com is the best domain extension.

The better domain you take, the less marketing you need, and the higher price you get.

Marketing is good or necessary for most domains' selling, but domains' prices are primarily decided by domains' values.

If you get a real gem, you don't have to do marketing for it. You just stay at home, some big guys will come to knock your door asking you to sell your good domain to them, and you'll smile all the way to your bank---this is a kind of stories happened before---it may happen again and again.

Some tools like Google adwords keyword tool, overture.com...are good, but you also need to see several domain online factors, and always consider a domain based on its real values and its real applications.

My 2 cents...

OVT is one way of judging whether a particular word or word combination is searched for, and if so, how frequently. You can then use this info to:

a) judge how big the demand is for this particular topic

b) judge the possibility/probability/likelihood (sp?) and frequency of receiving type-in traffic if you were to have a domain name comprised of the word(s) you searched

Domain value/selling price is always going to be a function of finding the right end user (or fellow domainer) that feels they can use the domain in an appropriate fashion to generate income or represent their product or service in the best possible fashion.

And just because few searches are done by the general public for a given word or words doesn't mean that they won't have value. A domain name made up of those keywords just needs to be marketed to a very targeted group.

Luck of the Draw?
No! You need to refine strategies to find the best names. These strategies often require learning and experience to refine. Two names will look quite similar but one will be worth 50 times the value of the other.

I like the idea of finding 100 good names and registering only 1. If you get good at rejecting names, you get better at finding the gems.

It is important to realise that some words are more valuable than others.

e.g. Space is usually better than Place, Hot is usually better than Awesome, Dog is usually better than Canine, etc...

Subscribe to the DNJournal.com newsletter and read the weekly sales data to get an idea of what are the good worlds

Getting feedback is a very useful way of learning. Often there is too much emotion in a domain purchase. You buy a domain because you like the name but the reality is that nobody else does. You need to learn about what characteristics of a name will appeal to the highest number of people.

don't purchase expensive stuff at beginning, you won't lose much if you make a mistake.
