So I decided to get a job. Sent my cv to an upcoming event centre with 5 star restaurants and I was called for an interview today.
The discussion was free flowing and interesting until they asked how much I would love to earn which I replied saying "above 100000 naira (=$300) a month" and the HR manager was like wtf the amount is ridiculous.
It really beats my imagination when companies pay lowball fees and expect you to work 6 days in a week for 12 hours.

if you can't find an alternative, just take whatever they offer imo.. how are you supposed to pay the bills?

I'd keep submitting cv's as this was just the only one I submitted

Just so I understand..12 hours a day or 12 hours in 6 days?

Anyway, yes restaurants are generally low paying, the only way to make more money is through tips.
Good luck with you job finding..

I don't know what is the average salary in your home country.
But things to keep in mind:
  • if you have no experience in this position, it's hard to claim the upper bracket
  • if the position does not involve any special skills, then you are replaceable and the employers can choose among hundreds of people lining up to take the job
I guess it's the law of supply and demand. But the only way to get rich is to be self-employed. You never get rich while working for somebody else.

Hey buddy, it 12 hours a day for 6 days (72 hours a week) and with the cost of living I'd be slaving without savings

I couldn't agree more but adviced in a previous thread I had to go look for a job. I'd take entrepreneurship any day anytime but I need funds to run my 3 acres of farmland and a food product

12 hours a day for 6 days.. we don't have 9 to 5 in Africa and South Asia, it's 9 to 9. That's why I love domaining :xf.grin:

Believe me I'd take domaining but I've not mastered it yet and I have responsibilities coming up

Good stuff for you to think about here. I am sure you are going to be able to work and do your entrepreneurship on the side. Doesn't make for much free time but you're a young man. Things will work out. Got to have steady and reliable money coming in? Do what you got to do. You know this and are doing so.
I learn so much regarding many things from this place because of the world wide participation. It has been good for me in many ways.

Did you eventually find out what they were willing to pay you?

They said they'd get back to me
I thought so. My advice for the future would be that always try to get the employer to quote you first. You will have then some advantage in the negotiations. Never quote first and if than never ever an exact fix amount. Always speek in price frames from x to y and try to achieve additional bonus payments or other benefits. When doing this you have to negotiate and explain them what benefits they will get if they hire you.
I hope this will help you to get the best payment you can achieve. Good luck!:xf.smile:
