These vanity ccTLDs are garnering huge business across the cyberspace for denoting everything but the country in question. For instance, take the .in ccTLD which was initially started to denote India. But now online social networking entrepreneurs are also making a beeline to register their sites under .in domain. Indian registries like Direct-I and Net4 are also getting top dollars from all manner of sites, from those seeking association with the internet (.in fits in perfectly), international operations (.in, again), even social networking sites who ask you to, yes join.in (come.in). And the beeline has become even greater with the .in registrations crossing 400,000 Monday, February 11.

I think what I understand is .com will be overtaken by .in from Indian origin (people from India registering domains)

Definitely , with .in coming in, people have now started focussing to their market segment focusing on Indian customers, Denoting themseleves . their product & services in India.

Good News!

Indian Govt should realize the potential now and encourage people buying the names by atleast making it competitive to .com.

A big boost we can see in terms of Stats!

The internet grew by nearly 153 million domain names in 2007, according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief (PDF) from VeriSign.

The base of domain name registrations grew 27 per cent in the last quarter of 2007 compared with the fourth quarter of 2006, and five per cent over the third quarter of 2007.

Taking into account domain names deleted by registrants in the five-day grace period before the end of 2007, the .com and .net base grew by 15.4 million over the entire year surpassing 80.4 million domain name registrations.

Country code top level domain name registrations totalled more than 58 million, a 33 per cent increase from 2006, but the composition of the domain name industry and rank order in terms of base size remained relatively constant.

I don't believe. Still one word domains are avialable in .in. I think once the prompotional offers for .in are over, it will not go as fast as now.
