I didn't say google was bad back then because the layout was simple. It definately has a better layout today! Just a little sidenote, it's a proven fact that websites with a great design/layout appear more professional/interesting to the end users rather than websites with a simple and sloppy design. It's just a fact of life!

Google was already on a solid path to become the #1 search engine back then, so there was no question about the quality they stood for

you beat me to it I was going to say, forget millions, think billions! If google continues their expansion (with all the funny ideas) at the current pace, I wouldn't be suprised if we'd be talking about trillions in 10-15 years from now.
