an increasing number of us are developing our domains. i thought it would be good to compare and contrast people's strategies here, for instance:
- how many names do you think it is optimal for a single person to develop?
- would you rather have one or two extensively developed names (100's of pages and features per name) - or 100 different minimally developed domains ? Or somewhere in between?
i have heard the "100 sites" figure used lots here. then there are namepros members who have one or two sites (like bqb.com, dnsalesprice.com, namebio.com) and mainly do one thing really well.
Possible advantages of having LOTS of developed names include:
• increasing the value of many domains for eventual sales
• increasing the chance of more eventual site sales
• the ability to cross advertise between them (creating a "network" to increase overall traffic
• the ability to easily and powerfully focus in on niches (for SEO), rather than overly competitive, general topics (such as "health" or "money")
• having different places to record different interests, data, existing connections, or information
• economies of scale via repetition - eg. four different templates and logo variations can be used to make 100 sites. ability to get cheaper deals on developing services if in bulk
• the ability to try different things out and see what works best
• developing is pretty fun/ addictive
The pluses i see in having only a FEW, WELL developed names are:
• it makes real value. with the explosion of made-for-adsense sites etc, the value of minisites will become close to zero
• it increases the possibility of a motivated buyer and motivated advertisers
• it increases the chance of your site getting a critical mass of viewers to "go viral" and ballistic (gets its head up in a competitive industry)
• it increases the likelihood that a visitor will return, increasing overall traffic
• it creates "real" businesses, with the possibilities of farming out, gaining employees, and other economies of scale relating to largeness
• more chance of sales, and big sales. recent blog sales include many in the $xxx, xxx+ range -- you would need to sell many thousands of minisites (with greater costs) to get to such a level
• the easier to publicize and promote - one domain to spread around the web/ city/ other advertising approaches
• Cuts out time consuming duplication issues. Only one sitemap, email address, plugins, spam filtering, design and logo creation, domain renewals, contact pages, etc etc.
for my side, i'm developing names relating to topics i enjoy writing and reading about anyway. i use my sites as a sort of backup/ external bookmark/ external hard-drive -- that also makes money. at the moment that looks like around 80 - 90 sites.
do you see any other positives or negatives in developing many - or few - domains? and what is your optimum development number/ strategy?
