How do sites that give textbook specific answers (for example: www.scanswers.org) not get shut down? i mean, in this case, sites with answers for sadlier oxfords vocabulary workshop books are often shut down (i've seen this). how come scanswers.org and other sites (like xcirc.com, which was sold and no longer is vocab answers) stay alive without being shut down? what's the legal basis for shutting down such sites anyway?

My guess would probably be that the company is unaware it exists. If they were to find out about it, by say, someone reporting it to them, than they'd probably take some sort of action. Usually in cases of copyright infringement, it's as easy as emailing the host with a DMCA takedown notice.

I'm not sure I understand the point of a vocabulary workshop though, you can pick up a dictionary for like $1 or find one free online.

no like the whole purpose is that many highschool english courses in USA use this one workbook known as the "sadlier oxford vocabulary workshop workbook". it's basically a workbook published by sadlier oxford and in it, it has definitions for about 300 words with multitudes of quesitons about each. teachers often give a chapter (20 words or so) for homework and MANY students feel that it is not worthy of their time and therefore many sites have sprung up online with the answers to such a website.

the actual CONTENT of the book isn't published (there are no definitions, sentences, excerpts) or anything - only the vocab words (20 per chapter). the answers are like:
Section A
1. paragon
2. extemporaneous

Section B
1. a
2. d
3. b

Very rough example, but just to illustrate how the only things on the website are words and choices for multiple choice questions. there's no actual COPYRIGHT infringement going on, is there? what is the legal action that the company may take (since this doesnt, at least in my opinion, seem like copyright infringement)?

thanks
