Teen Domaining - Legal?

SpaceshipSpaceship
Watch
A recent post in the Break Room discouraged buying and selling domains from several NamePros members (including myself, peaches, angisson, mikor, and Hitch) for being under the age of 18.

What do you think of this?

Personally, I was very frustrated reading that. I know all of the people listed are great domainers and have had countless successful transactions despire their age! >:(

Great post, Tom! :tu:

I had a long, ugly response I had typed out, but I felt it would be appropriate to delete it.

Why should it matter about age? It sohuld matter on the price and the name :!: if them to are both good in the eye of the buyer then a deal should be done :)

Age shouldn't matter, some adults don't have the maturity of a 3 year old. If the person is respectable and has a good TR then by all means they should be able to do business, as they have shown they can and have done it successfully.

You just got to remember that everyone starts young..

Her point was that it isn't a completely legal deal. Minors under 18 can't agree and sign contracts without their parent's permission and signature, also. I see what she's saying, but I don't think it actually matters because of what everyone else is saying.

The thing is, no one is going to be checking your age and asking for your parent's permission on everything you do. Unless someone does, you don't have a problem.

Well I'm under 18, and I do domain deals all the time. Everything is in my mother's name, with her permission. I see no problem with dealing with others under 18, as long as its totally legal.

I couldn't agree more. :)

Age shouldnt matter, what should matter is the maturity of the person, and TR when it comes to doing bussiness with the person.

Also in a domain sell you should be more focused on the domain name not on the person.
Absolutely. That's what my buyers always say. Domaining will almost certainly impact our future and improve our business skills, along with making a ton of money and being familiar with news and technology. Domaining is ideal for teens, and it's probably why teens have such a pull on this market. It's inexpensive to get into, and the benefits are always growing. B-)

Agreed. As I said in the other thread atleast we are not out doing wrong things and we are doing something that is actually good for us in a learning and improving skills stand point.
Yeah, I saw that post, and I completely agree. That's a great point.

People that use the "minors can't sign a valid contract" line as an excuse not to do business with some members overlook a couple of points,

1) It's highly unlikely that you would end up actually taking someone to court over a bad deal anyway. You might as well swear not to do business with anyone over the Internet without a valid picture ID, or anyone who lives in a different country, or for menial values that don't make it worth pursuing court action if something goes wrong. The large majority of bad deals are not followed up on.

In fact I can't think of one time yet where a NamePros member ended up in court with another.

2) Members on NamePros are held to a certain standard, regardless of their age. A bad deal is going to result in the termination of your account and a ruining of your reputation, whether you're 16 or 60. I also see a number of DNOA seals in this thread too. Scamming someone would be an ever bigger blow to a member's permanent status within that organization as well.

So anyone who builds a positive reputation and trader rating over a long period of time should be relatively safe to deal with, regardless of their age.

Just some of my thoughts on the matter.

Pretty much a more detailed analysis of my original response, very well said RJ and I couldn't agree with you more :tu:
