BOSTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, a towering figure in the Democratic Party who took the helm of one of America's most fabled political families after two older brothers were assassinated, has died, his family said. He was 77.

"Edward M. Kennedy, the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply, died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port (Massachusetts)," the Kennedy family said in a statement.

One of the most influential and longest-serving senators in U.S. history -- a liberal standard-bearer who was also known as a consummate congressional dealmaker -- Kennedy had been battling brain cancer, which was diagnosed in May 2008.

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever," the family statement said.

Difficult summer for that family - his sister just passed away a couple of weeks ago. Only 1 sister out of the 9 siblings still living.

He had his demons, but the Family Leave Act, Civil Rights, the ERA, Occupational Health and Safety, Americans with Disabilities, helping negotiate a lasting peace in Northern Ireland - he did a lot of good things too and routinely reached across party lines to do it. After 9/11 he personally called the families of each of the victims from his state to offer his condolences.

He was born into privilege, but never stopped fighting for those less fortunate, and he was one of those rare politicians who believed in something and never flip-flopped in his beliefs. Agree with his causes or not, he was the real deal.

RIP

I am personally glad he is dead. He was a sick individual that should have been in jail for many many years. And his policies left little to be desired as well.

That is very poor taste. I can't believe anyone would say anything like that whether you agree of disagree with his policies.

That is his/her personal opinion. He/she has every right to speak their mind. They might not be talking all about his Policies but maybe about Mary Jo or something else?

Sure he has every right to speak his mind, just as I do. The bottom line is saying you are "glad" someone is dead is in very poor taste.

Sorry I misspoke. I am extraordinarily happy that he is dead. And it is not in bad taste to be happy that some people die. Id be happy if Osama would die. Not saying teddy was as bad as him. But there is nothing in bad taste about it.

Yeah there is nothing in bad taste about being happy someone is dead, or comparing a respected senator to Osama Bin Laden.

Stay Classy.

I agree with bmugford here, lets please try to exercise a little restraint and respect in regards to the recently departed.

If you have nothing nice to say...don't say it. Even if you do say you didn't like him, at least try to be respectful about it.

Everyone has their own opinion...

How can you pay respect for someone who drove a girl off a bridge and killed the helpless girl?

RIP Mary Jo Kopechne

Exactly. I am not sure why we should be forced to be sad about his death when he was a bad man.

And I never compared him to Osama so stop making things up man. I was giving an example of why one might be happy when somebody dies. I even said that the two of them were not on the same degree by any means.

But I'd be happy about both of their demises. Osama much more then Teddy obviously.

LOL
Sure that is fine; if that is your personal opinion on me.. don't know why you would have one since I am not a public figure such as Kennedy.. but if that makes you feel better about yourself more power to you.
So then it's IMO that you, HappyHappy, and DesignsCincinnati are douche bags. Kennedy has done great things and those works will continue to bear positive fruit.

Both of you suck...

That's perfectly fine right?! It's my opinion. I'm not asking either of you.

PS To the others...Sorry for my lack of class

How about we try to keep the personal stuff out of it.

Whether you liked him or not, it's no reason to sling mud at one another.

Sharing hate or happiness of ones demise, I must agree, is inappropriate on many levels.
