I just picked this up last week TECHNIQUES(.)WS and plan on developing it into a site for (surprise surprise...) Techniques on many topics, including website development etc. Given the rarity of single worded domains these days (even though this is a plural), I found this gem available AND there's 5 million searches on G*gle for the keyword alone.

Here's some other research I did on other keywords relating to it:

For .WS to hold any value the keywords need to be amazing.

A domain like Investments.ws sold for $165.

I don't see much value as a reseller.

Thank you so much Brad for your input. :tu:

I was wondering though, whether the SE's algorithms would actually have .com TLD's in favour of others when they rank, or does content, popularity, quality and relevance have more inportance in this case? Just an observation, but I saw that Techniques(.)info is ranked higher than its .com/.net/.org counterparts.

Would my logic be on the right track in this case?

It's also encouraging to know that Investments.ws has sold for that much considering the keyword Investments gets:
2.74 Million (broad) searches pm globally and 135K (exact) searches with a CPC of $5.48

while...

Techniques gets:
5 Million (broad) and 45K (exact) searches globally with a lower CPC of $1.19

I also did some research on the .ws extention and it seems alot more domainers are preffering this over other TLD's due to its short 2 letters AND they're both close to each other on the keyboard AND it stands for "Web Site".

What do you think matey?

Any other opinions would also be appreciated.

Thanks again!;)

If you're talking about Google specifically, their methods tend to focus on the content that's on the site. Their algorithms are finely-tuned to get sites with more relevant content to the top, regardless of the domain it's on. That's why good development is so key to weaker domains. And on Google, I see the .org ranking higher, probably because it's a developed site with many customers.

As for the searches, it's the exact searches that matter. The broad searches include any search with techniques in the search terms, even if they're unlikely to lead to anything. "Best techniques for parking my car" would show up in broad, but not in exact, since exact requires it to be the only search term. And just because people search for it, doesn't mean they visit any sites once they see the incredible generic nature of that term.

As for the .ws extension, there may be many domainers preferring it, but there are very few good domainers preferring it. This industry is riddled with people who see sales like business.com, think the industry is a gold mine that will make them money quick, and then spend their money on awful domains or, all too commonly, TM domains. In the former case, at least they're only out the money they already spent; in the latter, they can easily lose much, much more.

That's why I (and many others here) try to be as honest as possible, even if the truth hurts. The domaining industry is vilified enough by people who (incorrectly) see it as trying to profit off other companies' goodwill. The US in particular has strict laws on cybersquatting because of this perception (and based on some domains that have been offered for sale, it's easy to see why).

Getting back to the original point, though, the .ws ccTLD never really took off. When was the last time that you saw the average Internet user even know the the .ws TLD even existed? As a branding aspect, even if .ws has the perception of standing for "web site," it doesn't have the recognition among the average user. As Brad pointed out, sales for .ws have been abysmal at best. There are plenty of people registering domains in that TLD, but virtually no appreciable sales. As an investment, .ws is a money sink, not a money maker.

With a good development work, every domain with every tld could acquire some value, sooner or later.
Build a good website, attract some traffic, increase your pagerank and your SE positions, and even Techniques [dot] ws will have some value ;)

I really appreciate your honesty and both of your valued input hrethel and matrigaldo. I think what you said above outlines the real key to success.

I'm on to it straight away. I have hope with the .ws domains for the future, but here's to hoping ey?:hehe:

I don't think I will sell this for a long time (if at all!).
Thanks gang!

No problem, Bizza. I'm glad to see your willingness to learn. There are plenty of people who come here for appraisals on truly horrible domains (25+ letters with no connection), then when told that it's worthless, respond that we clearly have no idea about the extreme value of their domain and that they'll be a millionaire by next Tuesday.

No matter whether it's domaining or baseball or chess, everyone starts out at the same level. It's all about learning and accepting constructive criticism that separates the people who eventually get good at it from those who spend years on such domains as ReallyCoolWebsiteWithGreenSuspendersOnIt.com and get nowhere fast. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement.

You know? All this seems so similar to the old days of the US when they first started their nation. Everyone was going west and whatnot to grab a piece of land, a piece of property no matter where and how small or large, which now are very very valuable!

I see owning domains/sites on the vastness of the WWW in a similar way.

Grab 'em gang... it's on for young and old!

The Wild West of the WWW is here.

Riding the wave...
