Suggestion: Prevent Indexing of Sales Threads

I highly recommend that we not let our sales threads be indexed in search engines... If a client of mine does a search on the web for their domain and comes across their domain that I bought for $1 (for example) and sees I sold it to them for $1,500 - it might be troubling.

Thoughts?

As I've been working on developing a lot of sites lately I've come across this numerous times and haven't brought it up until now :)

How about to delete /clear them 2-3 months later ?
Looks like its done in 'Fixed Price' but not in other Sections.

It's very simple.

Give us an opportunity to change (delete) thread title when we are closing our sales threads. That's it.

For example I sold a domain domain.com. When I'm closing my sale's thread I'm deleting all content from my posts and changing the title to - domain sold (for example)

It's not hard to tell Googlebot not to index a particular section of a forum... Then we don't even have to mask titles, delete them, etc.

Just prevent them from getting indexed in the first place!

yeah but what about the forum-reading/recyling sites out there like boardreader for example? the content is copied over anyway, regardless of whether google is stopped from indexing and/or we are able to completely edit out/delete threads later on.... or would that be prevented too?

Just keep in mind that if we started making complete sections unindexable, it kills the potential namepros has to pull organic search traffic, lots of that search traffic are potential members / buyers / sellers. It could turn into a slow suicide if we eliminate so many organic search entrances to the community which in the long run hurts everyone and cripples the full potential of NamePros.

that's a really great point Eric.... I was wondering about that aspect.

another concern, although as a buyer I really appreciate being able to have the domain (or at least the price) I purchase edited out of a thread, if NP became well known as a place where sellers could COMPLETELY delete/edit out (title) it would likely become a more preferred target for scammers thinking they could "leave without a trace" after quick sales. And, regarding indexing, I think that could also be a "perk" for scammers since if they got called out on a scam here, but the thread wasn't indexed, the warning wouldn't be broadcast across the net and makes it easier to attempt a repeat somewhere else.....

I think at this point the better approach would be to see what Matt is cooking up in his "platform" lab. I know RJ started a sales board component to NP and I thought Matt was working on the same; based on Matt's "thanks" in here, I'm sure this issue has been considered in his requirements for that.

Hopefully it will provide all the benefits people hope for.

If it were me? I might have sales be indexable and have a special "Carbon Card" holding member only sales section so people would have to pay for the benefit of operating behind closed walls but simultaneously no-one would lose anything that they currently get for free. It would also be more likely to find more serious types of sales and not the "my domain is expiring tomorrow but I don't want to pay regfee any takers for $250" type efforts.
