Subscription/membership software

I'm looking for some kind of PHP solution (preferably free) that will allow me to set up a membership/subscription site where I can charge for memberships, with paying members obviously gaining access to certain resources.

I know there's a load of such solutions out there, but I've not seen any free ones as yet, and it would be good to see which ones people rate the best.

you should probably first look at the website you're going to have that will be the platform for this, and the resources you will be providing. depending how complex you want it, you could even just have a password protected directory with the password changing monthly. and the password is sent out to the list of members monthly.

so, what is your site like, and what are the resources you are looking to provide to members?

Yes we could do it using a manual setup, but I'd like something a bit more automated.

So it has the whole solution from signup, to payment, to emailing out password to the customer.
Then at the end of the year the customer can automatically be re-billed or sent a reminder email.
