Hi all :)
Can you tell what you think about .SU (Soviet Union) names?
If they have really good keyword in their name, would you buy it and for what price?
Just interested in ANY opinions about it :)

Put it this way: if you are collector of useless stuff , then yes.

.su is no longer used , it`s worthless.

If it`s for the keyword, go and reg it in another ccTLD. :imho:

...as it's supposed to be being phased out (although it's still clinging on after all theses years) I'd (personally) stay away of buying any from a serious business perspective, if you're going to make some mock Soviet site for comedy purposes, just for a laugh, then it's ideal.

I wonder if anyone here owns any?

It was recently agreed with ICAAN, that .su domain will not be phase out.

There is strong resistance to .su by current russian domainers, because it erodes the vaule of their .ru domains. Further, there is talk of adding national domain in russian language, which will add more names to the market, and again erode the value of .ru as well as of .su domains.

Starting from december 2007, the price for .su was lowered from usd 100 to approx. usd 20, which resulted in increase of regged domains from 11,000 as of 01.12.2007 to 31,000 as of today (for comparison - .ru has 1,160,000 domains regged).

Anyone can register .su as well as .ru, there are no limitations. The price is the same for both residents and non residents.

Currently, there is a difficult procedure of selling the name - you need to send a letter to your register if you want to transfer the name to another user (same procedure as with .ru domains). It is expected that this procedure will be eased and made more like normal .com selling procedure, i.e. transfer to be made electronically. However, it is not know when this will be done.

The largest registrar is nic.ru (I use it), you can also use reg.ru or r01.ru. There are several other (10-20) official registrators, and many resellers.

I own around 50 of .su domains, some nice russian words, some english ones -line fruit related domains, i.e.blackberry.su for project of planting blackberries in some russian agriculture regions, .

After I got the names I liked, I stopped bying. In my opinion, the names are great for projects, i.e. I regged adultdating.su (there is a project already), kissing.su, colt.su, LLLL.su, memo.su, modeling.su, steak.su, tone.su, etc, but may be not as good for reselling. Consider this investment as highly risky, and do not allocate more than 5% of your budget to it.

Summarising - there are good chances now to get really nice names for you projects. There are high risks regarding the future value of these domains on one hand and a possibility that 150 million people of Russia + 100 million from former soviet union republics will use this extention on another. By the way, light.su is owned by IKEA.

So main reason that su isnt popular for foreign people, that is SOVIET UNION.
But if make it other description? S - super, U-universal :)
And Vlad told right, price is 20 USD and anyone can register it.
Also on russian forum i saw opinions, that it can be kinda typo from US names...
But as practise showed, theirs no such type, at least now.

So it was agreed to be kept forever? I was aware of the opposition, but thought it would still face the axe in the end.
Good news for existing .su holders.

Thanks for sharing the info, it was an interesting read.

Icann't would like to phase out .su but it's a highly political issue :)
So they recently deallocated .um that was not used anyway and that's it for the house-cleaning...

I would say it's a volatile TLD, IMO it will continue to exist for the coming years but not in the long-term future.
In the past a few TLDs like .cz (Czechoslovakia) or Zaire (.zr) were deleted but it was years ago so few would notice. Problem with .su, it still gets some use. But it's in competition with .ru and there is no clear reason why it should be maintained.
I would treat it as a novelty item but certainly not as an investment.

Actually this may work, people often type consequent letters in wrong order, I do at least :)

Can anybody show the official documents about the policy change?
It's an interesting and good news for .su holders. I guess the regisrars of .su never want it to be phased out, since they keep accepting new registration.

There's a report about .su phase-out process around 5 years ago.

Slightly off-topic... but is RIPN.net currently not taking any new .com.ru registrations for a while? I cannot find the page on their site where you can register a new name.

Not that I see high value in it, but I find it an excellent extention to experiment with (DNS stuff etc) because it is the only free ccTLD where you really own the domain and are free to use your own nameservers. So this means IMO .tk is just a redirect while .com.ru is the only truly free domain extention. Good for experimenting and for temporary websites where you rather don't spend much money on.

Now, is RIPN.net not taking new registrations anymore? I cannot find the registration page on their site. Even though .com.ru is fully operational, so I guess there must be a way to get new domains registered?

IMO, they want to keep .SU in case Soviet Union is back wth Putin as a new Stalin.

The results of the regular meeting of the centre:

The decision of the Coordination Centre of 23.08.2005 in connection with the mass registration of domain com.ru

The system of registration of domain names in the domain COM.RU have a problem to ensure its sustainable operation. The problem is related to attempts to mass-registration of third level domain names. The system has been sent a request for simultaneous registration of approximately 140 thousand domain names. This action was all the signs of DoS attacks, as well as a service has been quite a long time to completely blocked.
The need to prevent the recurrence of such incidents forced the domain administrator to manually move the processing of applications and set restrictions on the number of registered domain names. However, such restrictions would not solve the problem and only reduce the likelihood of another productive DoS attack. Moreover, in the opinion of the Coordinating Centre, the restrictions put users in unequal conditions with the registration system. Obviously, the existing rules for registration in the domains of free public demand changes. When planning in the near future to make the necessary changes in the rules, which would guarantee the opportunity for bonafide users register domain of the Board for Coordination Centre has taken the following action:

1. Basic principles of registration and changes to the rules for registration of domain names in the domains of common use.
1.1. Recognise necessary to change the rules in the administration GENERIC type domains.
1.2. Instruct Director CC organize the development of new rules to administer domains type GENERIC.
1.3. In up to 05 September 2005, to assess the cost of running the GENERIC type domains in the current environment and with the introduction of compulsory conditions checks at registration.
1.4. In up to 30 September 2005 to submit for the consideration of the FP proposals on the basic principles of administration of public domain and measures to ensure their sustainable operation.
1.5. To suspend the registration of domain names in the domain COM.RU before decisions of the CC on the proposals.
1.6. Grant administrators public domain, if necessary, to suspend the right to register domain names in their administrated domains.

This decision shall enter into force upon its publication on the site Coordination Centre.
