'tis very sad, I used to watch his show on occassion. Still in shock. :(

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death.

Yes crazy that he was killed by the barb. I've been whipped up the leg by one in shallow waters down here in San Diego, but I am sure its nothing like what he encountered. And by the way, in case you were wondering if they got it on tape, they did.

There's speculation they'll broadcast the footage of his death.. sources close to Steve say that's what he'd have wanted.. me, I don't think I could watch. Pretty gruesome and more than a bit morbid!

Thank you NP'ers.

The man is gone but his spirit and legacy continues.

This NP thread, and the outpouring of love and respect (across the world) for his mission, and what he stood for... has made me feel very good. It has restored my faith in human beings, that we understand and appreciate that all life is important, and we must do everything we can to protect them. From your own household dogs and cats, to crocodiles, to the wildest untamed jungle animal... they all have a right to be here, and they all should be protected.

"Wildlife"... "Animals"... "Environment"... "Conservation"... they are not just buzz words. They are not some political agenda. They are our most precious and irreplaceable resources. More valuable and more important than any oil fields, or any traded commodity on this planet.

Steve Irwin knew this.

And I'm glad to see that many of my NP bothers and sisters also know and understand this.

The most honorable way to remember Steve Irwin is to continue his mission and his fight. I'm confident that he would say the same thing if he could.

It pierced him in the heart, so he died instantly. He was only the 2nd ever person to be killed by a stingray in Australian history.

Actually he did not die instantly. He made it back onto the boat and then pulled out the barb himself before he became unconcious and passed away. All of this was caught on film.

The only other person in Australian history to die from a stingray barb was a young boy in 1988 who ironically was also pierced in the heart. He did manage to live for 6 days before he passed away. In his case though he was not even in the water. He and several friends were on a skiff when a ray came flying across the boat. As it did, it is believed that the "wings" of the ray touched several of the kids which spooked it causing it to lash with it's tail and barb.

Steve Irwin's passing is certainly sad. I cannot think of anyone else today in the world who has affected the world the same way he has. He also died doing what he loved to do and with his boots on.

Rest In Peace Steve.

:S

I heard on the news (bbc news), Steve's friend was talking, He said that the Ray pierced him in the heart and he was killed instantly. He also said that he hoped (and it was unlikely that) he felt any pain.

I hope this version is true as nobody likes suffering. But who knows.

At least ten stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia’s eastern coast in the last week in what conservationists believe could be revenge attacks for the death of Steve Irwin, the popular naturalist and television personality.
