'tis very sad, I used to watch his show on occassion. Still in shock. :(

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death.

After all the times he dodged death, I thought he was immune :(

I grew up watching him on animal planet, I can vividly remember watching him wrestle and alligator and tie it up, god knows why. I doubt anyone else in the world would even ATTEMPT to do that. I have fond memories of that man and will miss him.

How could you not find it upsetting, unless youโ€™re heartless, if a personโ€™s life is claimed to something he or she loves doing and leaves two kids without a parent? :-/ Wow, give me a break buddy!

I'm not saying that i dont feel for his family.

But if you die doing something you love and you know the risks and have accepted them, then that is something that should be applauded, not mourned.

For one, Iโ€™d hate to die doing something that I love and/or am enjoying. I would much rather have a natural death, but maybe Iโ€™m just an exception who doesn't want to die in a freak accident. :|

I just noticed this thread.... very sad. :(

Steve was a great guy. The "hunter" part of his nickname was often misunderstood by casual observers. I remember seeing an interview with him, where he made it clear that he was a lover & protector of animals & wildlife (not a mindless killer out to destroy them). He did a lot to help educate people on nature and the amazing creatures it holds.

Rest in peace.

I must say I only watched him on occasion - and it always
was an occasion :)
He was usually tying up or untying a croc, and I thought
he was amazing for doing what he did, the way he did it!

You could tell he had a true passion for what he chose in life...

The family must be devastated.
