Hi,

Well first of all let me say I am not looking to conquer the SE world with a search engine. I just want my own little piece of the SE market!

Well I am looking at making a search engine. This will be like other search engines but I would like your take on my ideas.

I will be adding adverting etc to the search pages.

What do you think of these aspects?

Domain- should it be short and snappy?

Script? Should I use a script that is one the internet already?(if so any example) or should I make one?

Design- should it be simple and not overload with grpahics etc?

What are your views on my ideas? Or if you have any input or would like to help PM me

Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

domain: short and snappy!

script: I don't think any decent SE will present it's secrets to the outside world, so this would mean programming it yourself (I would go for Python or maybe PHP) if you want to have a decent SE. Don't really what's available out there, but this is just my thought.

design: minimalistic, people don't come to a SE so look at all sorts of content, they just want to peform a search.

If you decide to code it yourself, let me know if you could use some help. Always in for a challenge and building a good SE ain't easy!

best of luck!

It is easy to get into the market but very difficult to stay in it unless you specialise.

Unless you are a programming genius with years of development time on your hands, use existing search engine software such as Mnogosearch.

Short, snappy, pronouncable.

Script? Should I use a script that is one the internet already?(if so any example) or should I make one?
A search engine is not a script. It is a set of programs.

Do some reading on the subject because building a good search engine is a tough thing to do. Select what you want to spider - specialise rather than try to take on Google/Yahoo/Microsoft.

If a SE is coded using scripting languages, it's a script or a combination of scripts; if it's coded using a compiled programming language, we call it a program or a combination of programs.

it would be a huge project, you need the database, the spider program that indexes what you and other feeds it, crawler to index/update the pages submitted
dmoz.org provides their 1Million database you need to have webpace for it. their program can be downloaded from their site. - you only have a directory at this stage. add the crawlers, spiders and you got a search engine. yeah also the ranker that ranks based on clicks, rates, visits of the domain incoming and outgoing links.

Yeah weblord is right. me and weblord had some talk in Jan 2006 about this thing. But I finally found a way to make a search engine by coding it myself. It took too much time and effort. If you are interested commercially then let me know.

And if you want to go for other scripts then here is the list that I have already seen and threw it out of the window :D

datapark
mngosearch
phpdig
sphider
aspseek
sme meta
curry guide
k-net

I have seen many others. Say around 100 other search engine things. Some requires dedicated servers and some can run on shared but have less features.

I have set up a non working demo of what is going to come on my search engine at http://www.juhy.com

:D
