Somewhat unusual question

I have a question for everyone here. The company I work for does not have an in-house design team and the CEO wants to change our design. But, instead of just hiring a freelancer, he wants to hold a design competition. Have any of you been involved in something like this, or heard of another company that has done this? Any info would help. Thanks.

I haven't heard that myself, but I'm sure some people over at designcontest.net could probably shed some light on the subject.
