Social Bookmarking

I'm still very new to the niche site world but have heard a few times now to use "social bookmarking" as part of the SEO/backlinking phase of your website.

This is probably a very simple question but..do I need to have followers before I use social bookmarking? I know to do this, I'm to create a new facebook, twitter etc.. account under my website/niche name (i think) and then list my website URL under that account. Since I've just created this new social media account though, I won't have any followers/friends. Is the point to just create the account, submit your website and move on? Or if I'm supposed to generate a following of people on my new account, I'm not sure how to do that.

First do clear that for which you have to do bookmark, for website/webpage or social media sites that you have mentioned here and in which you have an account?

FB/Twitter/G+ - you definitely want to get followers on those. Post things worth reading, put the buttons on your site, ask friends/family to help get things started.

Social bookmarking sites - part of the value is the profile link, but posting is good too. Don't just self-promote - nobody wants to follow that. Bookmark other things too. This also goes for FB and Twitter.. If you're lucky the other site might reciprocate.
