    what's a domain name?

Happened to me recently and I have to admit it caught me off guard!

It may me think how others involved in the industry would respond, so what would YOU say if you were asked?

i'd ask... have you ever heard of yahoo or amazon?
if they say yes, then i'd say... "those are the domain names of those websites"

if they say no, then i'd smack them with a bitcoin

    :)

    imo...

I tend to use the analogy of a street address. You know someone exists, but without an address; where are you going to find them? I use the same style of analogy when talking about the different TLDs. The dot com is the 5th Avenue address or high traffic shopping mall. Others, not so much... and some are undeveloped land out in the swamp on the edges of town. Cheaper, but not much traffic or drive-by!

there are many people who have never heard the word "domain name" or they just don't understand what this term means.

A business-person recently told me: "we don't need your websites"
When in fact there was no website, it was just a domain-name.

Better use terms like "internet website address" or "internet website name". Maybe they will understand something like this ?

I hope you don't mind if I use this when marketing a domain to someone...this is the best and simplest way to educate a potential buyer!

Yes, I would image that's quite a common misconception.

...just be grateful they didn't ask what an "Extension" or "Suffix" was also.

It is the unique name by which you can navigate to a website. Without it you'd have to remember a series of numbers. Like a street name and postcode (aka zip code) instead of coordinates.
