SnapNames rant.

As you all know, auctions frequently come down to the last few minutes of bidding... which is fine in most cases. However, with SnapNames, it's proving to be a bit of a difficult situation.

Why? I live in Japan.

Because of this, auctions always end at a little after 5:00 AM for me, and it's practically impossible for me to be awake at that time on a consistent basis.

The result?

I am constantly losing out on auctions by a mere one or two dollars.

I handle it by setting my bid proxy at a level high enough to win at the price I want! If the price goes higher, then by definition it is beyond my own valuation. If somebody else values the name more than I do, so be it.

Great advice. At drop auctions, deeper pockets always help, too.

Good point. But some of us are bidding on multiple domains.
Like for me, for example, I bid on like 6 domains at a tiem, knowing perfectly well that for atleast 50% i will be outbid finally, and i couldnt afford all 6 at the same time.

For the same reason, i need to look at the value of each domain and reevaluate as a whole which ones i would be sticking to, as the bids go higher. This is absolutely impossible with proxy bids.

I feel your pain. I'm in Asia too. In my case auctions end between 1-5am. How I handle this is to just bid the highest value I'm prepared to spend on the domain. If I win, I win. If I lose, I lose.

Sometimes for the early auction I might still be awake. However, if there was one I really must have, I set the alarm for 1/2 hr before auction ends. So I can watch and participate.

Thats so well put. Waking up at 5 to watch an auction still beats delivering pizza any day...

Would you wake up at 5 to catch a flight for an important business meeting? I'm sure you would. Just treat it in a similar way.

Easy to say if it's what you do for a living. But when it's something you do in addition to a normal job, the situation becomes a bit more complicated.

As for setting my maximum bid amount before going to sleep... I do. However, you often end up purchasing names for a higher price when handling it this way, because other last-minute bidders hike the price up toward your maximum. If, on the other hand, you are around at the auction's end, you can hold off on your bid until the last five minutes or so and often times get it for a lower price.

Nothing in this world is perfect and although I understand why you would want to be available for the end of the auction (sniping and all) the issue here is exactly what youve mentioned. Because this is not a full-time occupation for you - you must dedicate time where it is most important to you. In this case.... your regular job/life.

Consider this though - if you were a full-time domainer - it wouldnt be a problem.

I don't see your thinking there Nemesis. The other bidders are going bid whatever they bid until they give up. I don't see how placing your bid proxy encourages them to bid up their prices, any more than if you were competing with them in a live auction.

Anyhow. As others have said. Too bad. If you want to be in the auction game, you have to arrange your time around the auctions. If you cannot do that, then you'll never be satisfied with your auction experience. My experience has been about 50/50 with my proxy bids. Probably I lose the better domains. After they're gone I usually realize that the domain was worth more than my proxy bid

- I proposed SnapNames customer care to reschedule the time 10 - 12 hours later than the actual time, as it will enable people around the world to participate, without any hassles.

E.g. - The proposed closing time is 12 am in the US, in Asia it would be morning, Australia would be afternoon, UK would be early morning.

They responded saying "very good suggestion", will be looked into, but till date remains the same.

People still use SnapNames?

I would start to change the way you are looking at things... Let's say you are bidding on domains that are $100 or $200 etc... You spread your money out threw several bids and before you know it..... Your bidding almost $1,000.

I would go for Quality over Quanity here! Pick One domain at $1K ish and you will have a better chance at winning, plus it's more likely you will get a better ROI.

P.S. Charley....... Don't be making crazy suggestions to Snap... I already get up at 4:30 am... I don't want to have to stay up until 12 to bid at snap lol

if they do this what happens with NemesisXG (i fell her pain as well) would happen to me as well
but did you prpose to end 12am EST or PDT?
i am almost sure it is 12am EST what means it is 2 or 3am for me
i wouldnt bid anymore... but as Spade said the most important is what you do for a living (and i have another job too)

i also understand what Krossat is talking about cause i do this sometimes

so, for me what you have to do is focus in one name (when there are 2 or more that you want) and set a proxy bid that will probably be the winner bid... i think that you can watch how the bids are before you set your prooxy bid (how many bidders are, how many bids there are)

All very good suggestions and whatnot. It's interesting to hear about people from other parts of the world, too.

People often save their bid until the last few minutes and thus, if they become the high bidder with less effort, they may stop bidding at a certain point (as opposed to trying to catch an already-higher bidder). Make sense? People don't always have a set stopping point in mind; sometimes they play it by ear.

Anyway, I'm not really bitter about the situation. The topic is just meant to be a harmless little rant. No worries.

Yep Mate ! There are still many names out there. Yesterday Italic.net went for $ 700 +, very cheap.

Yeah I still use snapnames too... but less often.
I don't really play at namejet (just got one name there), I'm still waiting for real domains to be added to their lists
