as many know, .tv has a set of premiums listed through enom.com
(see http://www.enom.com/auctions/tv_names_browse.asp)

sure the mTld would like providers with resources to promote the names well,
that's great, but as time marches on, and in that they are "a business," at some point should they put names up for individuals/companies to buy at huge yearly premiums (if, mtld if you're reading, can you do it through me?)

i have invited the namepros .tv crowd to join in this discussion. it seems like with the recent couple weeks of .mobi press, things are exciting in both camps and they definitely have ideas that may aide us here. (some have recently ventured over to congratulate us on our recent events/press indeed)

i observed some posters on the .tv side state that the names were available for them years after the registry opened and liked that. others like the premium nature of .tv returning to 24.95 and being second on the GoDaddy search list. Here, many have negative views on Mtld's holding back of very premium names despite receiving applications for use. They vow to release big names, such as sex.mobi, but haven't said how and remain very cloak and dagger.

looking at the top names left for purchase, would some take the .mobi versions here. would they value them on par, less or more...

i think it will make for interesting discussion. importantly, i think the .mobi'ers and .tv'ers have a lot to add to each other in theory and practice. (if we can get .us'ers over on another issue, or this one, that's great too).

hi! tv'er here :)
mobi has names like sex.mobi that wasnt ever released?

most, not all, hate the premiums to one degree or another- some want it gone, others think it is a good idea but too expensive and others yet think a one time fee, then reg. renewals.

this whole story is still playing out!

there's a group of .mobiers that are worried about its restrictions in the face of new technology, including iphone and progeny. in that sense, they are very antsy for the names to get out for more publicity of the extension.

others still think the extension will be fine with or without the held names, but think that the extension would be better off with content. surely users of sex.mobi may then stray off and look at what else the extension has to offer.

there is a group that's angry with the mTld for being greedy and not releasing the names until they reach their profit quota. they are very vague about their formula and claim that there were several applications for names that didn't set forth enough planning or proper use in their proposals

thanks for coming. get some more .tv'ers over so we can do some comparisons...

it seems verisign/demand media is dancing its own greed dance ;-(

people with money, who can afford to plop down 5 grand on a premium supports them because they were able to buy one- lets see at renewal time if the name has not sold- .tv, like mobi, is not a type in traffic name- you gotta work at these-

mltd, verisign- its all a crock- it all, as always, boils down to $$$

i personally feel, and i am suuuuuuuure there will be rebuttel, that working tv/mobi this way in the long run will cause it undue stresses to the extensions- and who is left trying to put the pieces together? domainers who push to develope to show value-

mTld appears to be doing a lot of active things. they have a ready compliant site for developers; they are working on a mobile database; they have a homebase site showcasing key developed sites; they are actively putting out press releases picked up by big names like Forbes, they put out hundreds of reserved city names for the respective cities to lease for $2.5k in ads and other requirements; they have sponsored shows like the webbies and they have founding partners that may/may not kick up everything into high gear.

its been a good month and we're pretty happy with it. disney just put out a commercial spelling out the extension on the tv and bank of america has hung banners and brochures and zagat and AAA are advertising their mobis.

mTLD has both stressed they are witholding the names to ensure good content for the extension, but in the same breath stated explicitly that they are a company and looking at the bottom line.

if you had a nice chunk of change available, which .tv's listed for 50k and up are more worth it than others, i'm sure a bunch that were 50k+ went as well..

All good points, as well ... RFP's were the answer, but that certainly appears to be far less a priority now than mTLD making $$$$'s off of sales of the premium (initial 500) .MOBI's, IMHO (and into the hands of domainers / speculators / Usual Suspectsโ„ข ... this also does nothing for the "ecosystem" going to your key points of "better off with content" and "vague about their formula" (RFP's), IMHO. :gl:

I don't have anything against them making money, I just want to see as many of the names as possible get into the hands of developers, rather than domain speculators. Is there a way to strike a balance? Hard to say.

Good point, IMHO. :|

I can definitely see, though, why some are - and have been all along - CONVINCED that this was nothing more than a "money grab" by mTLD, IMHO. The RFP's gave me some hope ... but the RFP's seem to now be very far down on the priority list at the present time, in my view. How are these 1,000's of premiums/reserved's (and (formerly) RFP's) going to get in to the hands of developers, as you say, to build the critical "ecosystem" IHYO's? :talk:

well mTld markets the extension as a trustmark and we are putting a lot of trust in them. its just frustrating that they are so cloak and dagger and behind the scenes until something hits a press release and there is no one to monitor.

from a baseline perspective though, i really believe in the extension and that it would flourish without the names witheld anyway. of course it would be better with them. if they are permanently witheld though (with some sort of explanation or even "reserved" when searched at least) then

1. the mobi extension will be what it will be without it,
2. great premium, but not the ultimate premiums in those sectors will benefit
from it with less competition (which may be held by some of our fellow
readers, here and abroad)
3. when some of those names are finally released they will continue to bring
surges of press, boom and spice to the extension for years to come.

Premium prices are good for one thing and one thing only in my opinion. They keep the domain available to the highest initial bidder. I would not be in the position I am in if it were not for the .tv pricing scheme...I was able to register a lot of great names because nobody was willing to pay the money over the last few years. With YouTube setting a precedent that video IS the future, I felt that .tv was well positioned to take off. After doing some research, I concluded it was the most undervalued extension...including some of the premium names.

I was not here to ride the .com train, but I am here to ride the .tv train. If I had the opportunity to buy the names I have now, of course I would want to pay regular registration fees for them. I appreciate the premium pricing system for what it provided me but I don't think its necessarily the best thing for the extension.

To understand more on why I feel so strongly for .tv, check out this blog Monopoly, Domaining, and the .tv extension:

Premium pricing should be avoided, imho.

Most of the people even not aware of premium pricing, and they are thinking that most of the premium names were already taken by domainers. The truth is, a large percentage of premium one word names are still available for registration, and residing at the .TV registry with a huge yearly renewal fees. More than 50% of people do not know where to register (or) where to search for premium names.

The premium concept definitely kills the value of a namespace, imho.

i don't know if it "kills" the namespace, both .mobi and .tv appear to be thriving..

i do question whether it hinders the advancement of the namespace or otherwise negatively impacts it.
