"Many domainers are waiting for the big explosion of the use of drones in everyday life. Companies such as Amazon have long been keen to deliver some of it's parcels using drones, however the plans have hit a setback in America due to new proposed rules for small unmanned aircraft systems."

There have been countless domainer fads on NP alone.
That being said, I think drones are here to stay. That doesn't mean everybody wants to own a domain name. It's not just about choosing the right niche. The domain has to be good, or it will remain unsold forever.

On the article title 'Setback for drone domains?', I more likely would say "Setback for Some drone domains?"

"The proposed rules for drone usage includes prohibiting of releasing cargo, which will absolutely make the drones useless for a company such as Amazon who planned to use the drones as couriers."

If I'm reading this right, &/or it was written up right, I'm wondering what might happen if those receiving the cargo were to do the releasing, rather than the drone doing it - if that might change the ruling in at least some instances.

I've had 6 offers on 2 of ~20 names that I own.

The drone market is huge, and I claimed the best of a niche in it.

Chicago passed the laws allowing these specific drones to fly, they can be helpful in predicting hurricanes and are already in use in Canada for various things.

I'm not worried either way. They cost me a buck ninety-nine, and I'll hold out for another 5+ years as usual since they received offers after the law passed.

All I can say is this:
A lot of domainers will be left spending too much money on domains that are destined to die an electronic death as no one will buy them.

That's true. A lot of people also invested in homes for a nice investment, and then the market crashed. :)

Research is a key player in domain investing, but speculating is what makes or breaks you in the end. Put all eggs in one basket and it fails, your house is foreclosed on, so to speak.

Domains and houses are like apples and oranges.
When will domainers learn this?
And quit trying to compare domains to anything else?

Yen and dollars are apples and oranges as well, but people still make a fortune, or lose it, trading back and forth.

You're right though, it can't be realistically compared to any other market. My intentions were to point out that people can make poor investment decisions in any market, including the housing market, but taking the aspect of speculation out of the picture or ignoring past trends.

In domain name investing, one can make a poor decision such as purchasing all real-estate instead of diversifying, as well.

Again, yen and dollars are currencies.
Not apples and oranges.

And again, still got to compare domains to real estate.
Geesh...

Well, I cannot walk into a store with my 500 Yen and purchase $5 worth of goods. I would need to go to the bank, time it just right and exchange on the peak. Currencies, as well as precious metals and commodities are apples and oranges. In fact, apples and oranges are fruits, which can be future traded as well. :)

I'd like to reiterate once more, I compared the mentality of investing in 1 thing (real-estate) as opposed to diversifying (commercial property, homes, apartment complexes, etc.). That is the same with domain name investing.

With the housing bubble, a lot of investors lost money and their homes. Perhaps if they had commercial properties, things may have been different for them. Who knows.

What I was saying is, if you are a domain name investor, don't have 100 drone domain names and 0 other names to back you up on. Much like, don't own 5 homes and 0 commercial properties as there have been numerous bubbles.

A domain name trend is just that, a trend. Some trends make it, such as cloud and some trends don't.

I could care less if drones, holo, etc. make it or not, since I am diversified in trends, generics, LLLL's, LLL's, products, etc.

I merely stated that domain investors with the mentality of purchasing a home on top of a home, like real-estate flippers in the 2000's, will do poorly if the trend does not take off, or they were too late in the game and bought high.

Nowhere did I state domain investing is like real-estate investing. It is the mentality of the investor to know what to invest in and when to call it quits.

Trends can get people sucked in, so stay away.

Diversification in any market will do best.

I agree.
To go whole hog in any trend is dumb.
But bottom line in domaining?
There will be some winners, but mostly losers.
People lose sight of that simple fact.
Not all domains are going to resell for much if anything.

Can't agree more. People see a 'trend' thread and register 100 names with coupons, instead of registering brandables, etc. or looking outside of the box and investing in what they know.

Investing in what you know will do you better off.

Such as bacon. If you are a bacon expert, it would be real easy to monetize a blog about bacon. :P

I'm sure a lot of the drone domain names are losers, but if an expert had them and took the time to develop each one, they could produce a good revenue stream for them.

They won't ever be sold without that though. They got in too late.

Mike Mann bought drone names in '07 (or those were their age, don't specifically know) and sold one for $5000. So, it can be done in any trend, but did you get the good names or are you just registering thisisaflyingdrone.com speculating that there are land drones and going for broke with it and others?

That mentality, as was borrowing on borrowing for another house, will kill you in the end.

Research or stick to what you know. :P

I dont see them as a setback, the rules has been designed, personal use of drones does not have a problem yet I guess. As far as amazon and others are considered they have not yet specified any rules for commercial delivery with drones, as we may see them soon in the quite near future. About drone domains, when the information gets out some are lucky enough to know about it read about it and take action about it, as far as a guy who hears this news about drones for the first time as a domainer he would be excited to hear and would look to register some names which are already been registered back. So he does some research and finds out some long drone names...... and register that which may never sell. Every market in the world is like that, if you analyze for any products, some make insane amounts of money while some never make a penny. You can consider all these to apples or oranges or real estate or anything you may have fancy for.
