Hello you brilliant little devils,

This grumpy old man asks please could you lend
some of your knowledge and explain how to make
this work?

I have installed 2003 Enterprise on an older (like me)
socket370 P3 with dual 1000/256/133. I have 2Gb
Registered ecc 133 ram, 1 80 gig WD as C:\, and 2
Maxtor 160gig both partitioned to 80's.

It has a 3Com Etherlink XL 10/100 PCI For Complete
PC Managment NIC (3C905C-TX)
(sorry, thats what it calls itself), and various removables
and pci cards.

I am connected through a router (along with 4 other ppls 'puters)
to Cable Modem that allows all to download @ around 650-850kps.

My question.....finally....How do I publish websites with
it? What will I need to make a permenant IP, where do I
get Nameservers, does 2003 have all the tools I'll need?

I have Windows disks for SQL server 2000, Systems
Managment Server 20,Operations Manager 2000...
none of which I know a freeking thing about.

I'm not looking to set up hosting but to to have direct
access to several sites while I learn to tweek them.
Any thoughts, Ideas, Suggestions, Links, keeping in mind
that I stand here a c0mplete n00b and will most likely require
many (virtual) slaps for my n00bism before this is over.

>>>>>>>>>>> I have NP$ <<<<<<<<<<<<
obtained just for this educational process and will gladly
part with large amounts of it to get this done quickly and
properly.

So step up....
Who will help this feeble, old, not as bright as he once was,
'60 survivor to live out his final days with this small measure
of kindness.

Thats my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Thanks in advance, kid5150

Please PM... I will be on and off all this evening.

This may not be the answer your looking for but I'm sure it will help. I used to run my own home server and I used this server software called Abyss Web Server. It's available at http://www.aprelium.com/. If you were interested in using that I would be able to help you install it.
I know you can also use Apache but I found it a bit to complicated. Abyss is just an easy way to get up and going. You can even install PHP, ASP, etc. very easily.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the software is free!

Thanks guys,

I have tried both Apache & Abyss before
and it wasnt what I was looking for. What
I want to do is see if I, with help, can make
2003 work for me. I do appreciate your posts
though, however I need specfic instruction
on setting up Windows 2003 Enterprise.
I have gone through MS everything and
just dont get it.
Any "BillsToolzForFoolz" masters out there?
Thanks again kjmz and majinbuu1023.

I prefer Apache for all my Web server stuff. Also, I recommend Linux!

On another note, I recommend you get a dedicated server. Most ISPs do not allow servers.

Hello Pal,
I am a microsoft certified professional and system administrator
So i will be able to help you to a limit
Enterprise 2003 is not a solution for web servers
Try getting Web 2003
Then after the web installation is complete you have to install the bundled application server package which contains asp.net, .net framework and IIS 6.0 which is the real web server.
After the installation is complete, you will have to access your website
Yes you need a static ip if you want connected 24/7 but for homeservers, get a domain for USD 16 from no-ip.com or free subdomain of them and download the dynamic dns update software from them. Next install the dynamic dns updates software, which updates your current ip to domain. Next you have to configure the web server.
Goto run and type "inetmgr" without quotes which opens IIS control panel
Goto the websites section shown on the left tab which will already have default website
if you want you can keep it or delete it and right click "Websites" folder icon in it to create new site
Go through those sections and try to do things yourself
Try first with html and then php
to install php, read the php documentation where they say how to install to iis
Will reply with more details or
contact me on msn at [email protected] for some help and tips
cya

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Application server package can be found in Control Panel> Add remove pgms>windows components>application server
Just select all the components of application server by double clicking it and selecting in the new dialogue

Install Linux MEPIS, you can use that as a server. It will allow you to setup NS etc on your home computer.

BUT, what speed is your connection to the internet?

MEPIS is sooooo easy to install, nothing complicated and it has everything that you need on it already.

OK,

That idea went belly up.
Way easier just to get hosting.
Thanks to everyone who responded,
this thread is closed.
Peace, kp

I see the same thought went through your head as mine and pretty much everybody elses. It seems that we all came to the same conclusion.
