Serbian Government yesterday (14.01.2010.) tasked the Ministry of Telecommunications to take measures to up to 2011. provide the conditions for granting the internet domain in Cyrillic. The Government adopted a conclusion about the Cyrillic ccTLD. Now comes the debate about the abbreviations, rules, and delegation of ICANN. The real beginning from the 2011th. Slobodan Markovic, advisor to the Ministry of Telecommunications, explains that this means that, with the current domain extension .rs in Latin alphabet, will be added one completely new in Cyrillic. The name of that extension is not yet known (perhaps, for example .срб or .србија in Cyrillic).

Seems you're a local. Are people really using Cyrillic in Serbia, or is the Latin script mostly used.

Thx.

Yes, I know where you are coming from. As you probably know Serbian is an example of synchronic digraphia. Both scripts, Latin and Cyrillic alphabets are widely used in Serbia...Latin little bit more in last few decades. One of the reasons I think that it is good idea to have IDNs in Cyrillic is because to save this script in future. It is part of our cultural heritage. All Government's websites have version in both letters, but Cyrillic is default (e.g. website of Serbian Government, Google has only version in Cyrillic (Google), Wordpress is translated only with Cyrillic letters etc. There are lot of other examples of using Cyrillic online and in the real life too (e.g. most popular and one of oldest newspapers in Balkans is printing in Cyrillic). The last but not least I write in Latin but sign in Cyrillic.

IDNs in Serbian have different kind of problem than it is using or not Cyrillic alphabet for it IMHO. There are 3 opinions regarding Serbian IDNs in our online community: 1. we do not need at all IDNs, 2. if we need IDNs than we need only IDNs in Latin, 3. we need IDNs only if that will be with both alphabets. I belong to the third group. But we need to discuss, consider and use the best solution for our IDNs. IMO one person / company MUST have both versions of IDNs. When someone purchases an IDN in e.g. Latin, than automatically gets another version in Cyrillic...I think that there will be lot of confusion in the case that different people have the same keyword in different alphabet versions (one person / company have domain in Latin and another one in Cyrillic alphabet, because pronunciation is the same, the letters are different). I hope that we will find best solution for it.

Very good information my friend
Rep added

I have noticed very much the duplicity of the language from idn to ascii.
There does seem to be a large presence of the language in idn for the amount of users that are currently stated as having internet access in the country.

I dont honestly feel that the addition of the idn of the cctld is going to benefit the domain structure at this point. I would feel that the availability of domains in the non cctld for the area is still currently good. Any furthur expansion may cause confusion.

I have investments in several single character idns in cyrillic. The traffic is marginal but steady which tends to point to the suggestion that the domain traffic and supply has not reached a saturation point

I do think this will change as the countries network infrastructure increases over the next few years.

Thanks for the info
