Hi and welcome to namepros ! i would suggest reading all the threads on here there is plenty of information. also check namebio , for recent sales and watch as many auctions as you can to get a hang on what is selling and for what prices.

Stick with the .com domains, observe appraisals on NP, read DNjournal to see what is selling the best, and read everything you can on NP.
And as mentioned above, daily check namebio.
