I had a domain parked on Afternic and received an offer for it. Eveything was going well until my Registrar(IPOWER) asked the buyer to provide a goverment issued id as verification. That's when all communication with the buyer came to a stop. After a few weeks I recieved communication from Afternic saying that they would release the funds to me if I unlocked the domain and give them access to the domain. As a newbie I was eager to sell my first domain, but this did not sound right to me. Any thoughts?

Sounds about right. They would have asked for id, he must have provided it.

Now if you unlock the domain, you confirm ownership, then escrow, then sale...
Where's the scam in that? Unless they don't open escrow and ask for a transfer.
Check the full message headers to ensure it originates from Afternic.

Good Luck

Unlocking the domain is a necessary first step in a domain transfer. I'm surprised they didn't ask for the EPP code, though. You will still be able to approve or deny any transfer request until you've supplied the code(s).

Make sure that the E-mail actually comes from afternic and is not faked.

Give them access to what?
To your IPOWER account where the domain is registered ... Your registrar account password etc?

If so then no, Afternic (Or anybody else for that matter don't need access to the account you have with your registrar)

A request to unlock the domain is normal practice as it can't be transferred away from your registrar (IPOWER) if it is locked.

As was said above they usually need the EPP code (Or Auth Code as it is also known as) to transfer away from your registrar.

Just make sure that any transfer away from your control is going to Afternic and not anybody else.

Hi,

If your domain is Parked at Afternic then you must have an Afternic account.

Log into your account and see if there really is an offer for your domain.
