I was wandering how you would go about running a news website, how do you find the news to write about?

Is there a site which can provide you with the news for a fee or for free?

News sites have to be updated quite frequently and I don't think you would honestly succeed. You have to compete with great sites like cnn.com and local news/papers websites. It would be quite frustrating, hard, and not worth your time.

Just my opinion,

Yea, I'm not trying to compete with CNN, my site is more focused on web technologies etc, and wouldnt have a large scope like CNN, so how do yo9u go about running one?

I would use RSS... you could write stories about stories that have already been posted. You could also try to get a feed from the Associated Press (http://ap.org) which uses NNTP protocol.

If you choose RSS you can use feeds from multiple different websites, and some even have query searches, so you get a feed of results that relate to the query in the feed URL... here's a list of some good sites to get news feeds from:
http://www.topix.net - You can grab query feeds from this site as I mentioned above.
http://news.google.com - Google provides query feeds similar to the method i mentioned above, except they also provide feeds that are category based. (a feed for technology, one for entertainment, one for business, etc...)
http://news.yahoo.com - Yahoo! News works on the same principle as google news.
http://technorati.com/ - Technorati grabs feeds from blogs, so you can get news from industry leaders, and just regulars that are in the webDev industry like you & myself.

I hope you found this helpful :)
I'll be posting information like this, and new ideas all the time on my blog at http://jeremysarda.com you should stop by and read it if you can can find the time, leave comments too! :)

- Jeremy

P.S.
I am a web developer, so if you're looking to get something like
this done, maybe I can quote the project for you :)

Actual newspapers and magazines get news from sources like newswire,

http://media.prnewswire.com

or AP
http://www.ap.org/

If you're just looking to comment on the news and not be a source for breaking news, you could probably do fine just watching news.google.com and gathering information on each story from various sources.

Yea, I was thinking of writing news, as in my own news stories about technology but it could be quite liniting if you know what I mean, I would only be able to write maybe 2 200 word news stories a day maybe even less. Your thoughts?

www.betadot.com and www.domaining.ws both use blogs.

I'd recommend a Blog...

I also have a post in the free resources board of some news feeds you can pull from.
