Rules for .eu

The European Commission has unveiled "public policy rules concerning implementation and functions of the .eu Top Level Domain and the principles governing registration." The full Commission Regulation (EC No 874/2004) is available only in PDF format, but we publish an abstract in this article.

Publication of the rules brings us one step further to launching .eu. During the next few weeks, EURid expects to sign a contract with the European Commission and continue negotiations with ICANN to have .eu put in the root dns servers.

So did they decide that non-EU residents can purchase .eu domains? I heard you would have to live in the EU if you wanted a eu domain.

Im not to sure about that really Wesley its a good question but I dont know the answer myself.

Who can register a .eu domain name?

The EC Regulation No 733/2002 of 22 April 2002 on the implementation of the .eu Top Level Domain determines who will be allowed to apply for a .eu domain name.

The following categories of companies, organisations and individuals will be able to register a .eu domain:


undertakings having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Community;

organisations established within the European Community without prejudice to the application of national law;

natural persons resident within the European Community.
