Hi,
I just bought this strange domain:

ro.ma

this is the name of my city (Rome in english, Roma in italian), the mighty capital of Italy.

It was a quite big investment (.ma is not cheap at all) but I think I have got one of the best domain for a big portal/community about my hometown.

What do you think?

Not sure about the value of these types of domains, but reckon it could be worth mid-high XXX to the right buyer.

yes, even if it's not easy to find a buyer for it. By the way, I'm going to develop it probably...

Yeah man, you really should develop it into a website to gain steady income from.
I see a very nice possibilities for this domain.
A sort of startpage/directory for the city of Rome.

Pizza
Shopping
Tourist

and such entries.

Contact all sorts of businesses and other type of industries that is related to Rome and build up a massive directory.
You can approach businesses for direct advertisement on your site.

Take good care in thinking up a business model for this domain. But the domain is AWESOME for this type of use. Also very memorable for everyone worldwide.

Good potential and needs some serious thought in development design wise and how users will browse the site. Also spend some time in thinking up a business model for this site regarding advertising from locals and local businesses on your site.

You could make a nice income from it.
Don't sell it as of now is my own personal advice and make something out of it. Spend money on hiring programmers on some decent freelancers sites to get the perfect result for what you have in mind regarding the kind of business model you would like to implement.
When it grows the site wil be more valuable if you would ever decide to sell it.

I would say do not sell right now unless you recieve a bid that is according your point in life an offer you can not refuse.

Thank you Damion, very accurate and interesting view.
I'm actually graduated in computer science, so I'm my own developer and this makes my business model extremely flexible.
One of the strongest points of this domain is - in my hope - the fact that Rome will be here forever, so whatever I do on the website will be of big value.
It's great for finding partnerships with local stores (ex. I could offer second level ecommerce sites for low prices). Also, I could provide town news & cool events around, a metropolitan blog and - obviously - a big community divided in quarters.

Yeah, as I live in Roma I'm really happy about this piece and will give great efforts on making of it something big, beautiful and lungimirant

Haha, don't worry it's been there for thousands of years and many years to come. Unless the vesuvius is going crazy and takes Rome with it i don't see eminent danger for your well known and famous city.

Offering second level ecommerce sites does have some potential i guess but..yes...sorry i use the word ''but'' i did not had this mind actually for as content on the site.
I would use this offer for newsletter subscriptions and give the site a more portal like look and feel. I think when adding pages regarding this type of business dilutes the look and feel of a portal and causes confusion.

Including these type of offers in Newsletters is an excellent option and the site ro.ma itself holds it's identity as a site dedicated to Rome and not to selling eCommerce software or services.

I would concentrate on direct advertisement by locals and local businesses since this would if done correctly let the the site holds it's identity as a portal site.

Implenting Google maps to find things/businesses in Rome is an idea that comes up ;)
Make the design in such a way it looks easy on the eye and ordered and still has room for advertisement.
A special search box with autofill option to search the site and content for letting visitors finding stuff quickly.

Just like the site www.answers.com has on the front page.

Great domain for the intended usage! Couldn't think of a better one.

To sell the domain alone, hard to say - probably not much more than reg fee. How much is .ma to register, by the way?
