So I have this client who went through a bitter divorce, and his ex wife has been posting false stories about him. and of coarse, she went and filed a false rip off report about his company. Any way, how can you get these things removed without being extorted, or do I need a lawyer to get them to take them down.

He has one fake story at Ripoff Report | Home and another at Free Press Release - Online Press Release Distribution Service

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

well, its hard to get them removed from ripoff reports. lot of companies face the same situation where clietns post negetive reports on that site. going through lawyer may not be an ideal solution as it would be very expensive and might not even be fruitful. your client will end up spending thousands in legal expenses and it might takes years before you hear any news, whether negetive or positive. best course of action would be running a reputaion management campaign to push the ripoff report page down enough so that when someone searches the company name, only positive pages are found. would cost lot less than a litigation and at the same time get some promotion and drive some traffic to the business as well

I just happened upon some lawyer's blog about Rip Off Report yesterday, though I can't for the life of me remember the address, sorry. I suffer from ADD, I have browsing history disabled and I have a terrible memory, so God only knows what I've seen or done. Anyway, basically, they seem to have a nice extortion ring going there. They charge 50k to allow a company to rebut the report. They've been sued A LOT. They won all of those lawsuits. They've settled rarely.

Basically, it comes down to this. If the information was posted by a user, who is completely unrelated to Ripoff Report, even if the information is 100% false, Ripoff Report is protected by law and has absolutely no obligation to remove it. So in your case, there is very little your client can do except to sue his ex-wife for libel. But that still won't get it removed from Ripoff Report. So, short of making an offer to purchase the company that owns Ripoff Report, there's very little your client can do.

there you go... thats how it is actually. since those reports are published by users, you cant tell or force (legally) to get them remve the reports. best course of action in this case is to spend some money on reputation management. why spend 50k in legal expense where you can spend a fraction to make them "disappear" from first 2-3 pages?
