Hi Everyone,

Just need some clarification from everyone as Afternic support are not listening.
I have plenty experience in the domain industry but have been away for a couple of years until recently. This is the situation
1) This week I sold a domain for $39K listed for sale in my new Afternic account after they were migrated from Dan.com 6 months+ ago and had Dan.com nameservers and an Afternic lander.
2) In my head, Afternic always only charged 15%-20% commission so when i logged in to add the Auth Code only then did I see the payout amount which was like $29K and I though it can be right
3) I looked on the website and saw that it says(as in my screenshot from yesterday)if a domain is using Dan.com nameservers it is still classified as part of the Godaddy Aftermarket Nameservers so I should only be charged 15%
4) The 5% Boost i understand, they got me on that one. Thye told me that when you sign up for an Afternic account is is set to default and you have to manually switch it off. I think that that is backhanded and irregular but there is not much I could do about that
5) I have not enteered the Auth Code yet and have the domain still locked

So am I in the wrong, even though it still says all this on their website that I should only be charged 15% + 5% or have things changed and they are right. Its a big sale so it is a big difference in payouts. Please let me know

AFTERNIC Want to Charge me 30% COMMISSION On A Dan.com Nameserver Domain. Is this normal?
If your domain name(s) are using "dan.com" nameservers, then it seems like it should be considered GoDaddy Aftermarket Nameservers (and that the commission should be 20% = 15% + 5% Boost).

What did Afternic Support say?

From their Pricing-and-fees page:
As a matter of clarity, nameservers ending in one of the following domains are considered GoDaddy Aftermarket Nameservers:

  • afternic.com
  • smartname.com
  • uniregistrymarket.link
  • dan.com
  • undeveloped.com
  • internettraffic.com
  • cashparking.com

I have just had an update and this is what happened:
1) As the domain was previously on a buy to lease the domain had a NS1.DAN.HOSTING
nameserver

Its still Dan/Godaddy though isnt it?

Did you use ns1.dan.com and ns2.dan.com, as well?

For verification, DAN also used the <unique_id>.ns3.dan.hosting nameserver, but it looks like you were not using that one. The nameserver you mention, is not recognized, it seems. It's not an official (recommended) DAN.COM nameserver.

I'd say, if the other nameservers were set to ns1.dan.com and ns2.dan.com at time of payment, you'd pay the lower commission.

Please check here what nameservers were configured for your domain: https://dns.coffee/domains

The NS1.DAN.HOSTING is definitely one used by Dan. The domain was once being held as a buy to lease at Dan.com but the buyer did not complete the terms.
Should it still not come under the terms?
I respect you guys opinion

Okay, could be that DAN.COM used this (and they set this themselves).

What were the other (2?) nameservers at time of sale?

Here are more domains using that nameserver:

https://dns.coffee/nameservers/NS1.DAN.HOSTING

The nameservers assigned are:

Name Server: NS1.DAN.HOSTING
Name Server: NS2.DAN.HOSTING

@GoDaddy This should qualify as GoDaddy Aftermarket nameservers, especially since OP said that the LTO was cancelled, and DAN.COM did not change NS back to ns1.dan.com ns2.dan.com.

Thanks for that opinion. Its what I am thinking as it is a Godaddy network company that did these changes and did not revert them back
I know I should have checked but I assumed with the migration anything not right would have been picked up

While technically not using dan.com nameservers, I would say the Dan-to-Afternic migration/conversion team dropped the ball on this scenario, and that Afternic should do the right thing here and charge the lower commission.

They should also clarify this moving forward. Explicitly say they will / won't consider dan.hosting for valid NS.

Dan sellers converted to Afternic should also check if they have any names that fall into this situation and fix them ASAP.

Hah I know! but I think it is a bit underhanded the way they are doing it. Especially the Boost being default when you open an account

I agree, I know it is a grey area and this will happen again to someone or has already happened numerous times before

The estimated payout is $27K from the $39K Sale not the $29K I mentioned in the first post. I know I should be happy with it and I am but 30% just does not sit right with me in my gut, especially when Dan.com made the changes not me, and if GD hadnt purchased Dan then the sale would have gone through on low commission as I believe its the original L2O "buyer" from before
30% instead of 20% is like $4K difference which is a lot for me.
I kinda want to cancel the whole transaction now
But thanks for your help guys, I would kike to hear if a @GoDaddy rep can shed any light onto this case

Hi @Dot Superstore,
Firstly, congrats on your sale! Our team is already aware of this from your support inquiry, which was escalated prior to your original post here. We'll connect with you offline to see how we can best close this out.

For anyone else reading, the list of approved nameservers for Afternic commission discounts is posted here.

If this was not an "approved" nameserver, it is just some technicality.

The solution is simple. Do the right thing and charge the standard commission.

You're asking quite a lot from godaddy if you want them to do the right thing

This is a perfect example of a situation where @GoDaddy could actually build some goodwill.

You have a situation where someone is clearly not intentionally using a third party nameserver.

Just because it is not on some "approved" list, doesn't mean the seller should be out thousands of dollars.

That would be entirely unreasonable. IMO.

In my opiniรณn 30% for a 39K domain sale is a complete abuse. And especially if you tell me that it was with the DNS of dan any of them, if it ends in dan.com it is the same to me.

It this case if Godaddy not resolve I go with this options:

1- if know the buyer or maybe any idea. Contact with her or find it out of Godaddy and explain the problem.
2 - Offer especial discount about 1K for this problem.
3- Cancell the order in Godaddy.
4- Go to Sedo and send all the data to go with the sale with the service: "ServiceTransfer". This have a small fee for only 3%.

When finish the sell remember tu put the domain name in the post: latesr domain sales! โ˜บ๏ธ

Congrants for the sale!

Or, @GoDaddy, go with your natural instincts and DO THE WRONG THING.

Good news. Received an email from Afternic last night stating they will adjust the commission to 20% as "a one time exception" .
After butting heads with the support twice, I honestly do not think this would have been resolved without You Guys(Namepros Community) help and James Iles assistance and also with me withholding the Auth Code. So I wanna say thanks, really appreciated.
