Type of Contest : Logo Design
Prize : $50 first, $30 second, $20 third
Contest End Date & Time : Friday, January 11, 5:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern time
Size Requirements : not fixed
Color Requirements : must look good in color or B/W

We need a logo for the Society for Pediatric Sedation. This is a group of doctors who are experts in sedating children (making them calm or unconscious) while medical procedures, such as MRI scans, are performed on them.

The logo would be used on the society's website and in printed materials (publications, letterhead, etc.). It would need to look good in a range of sizes.

The people who are working on this project have suggested some basic elements that should probably be included: a child lying on a bed or medical table, some type of medical machinery/equipment (maybe a circular scan-machine opening near the child's head), the acronym "SPS", and the words "Society for Pediatric Sedation". They also like the tagline "Safe and Sound", but that may be too much text for a logo that will be reproduced in small sizes; use your best design judgment.

No particular color scheme is required, but it should be kept simple enough to look good in black-and-white.

I have run other design contests here before, with all prizes paid to NamePros members. That (along with my trader rating) should make it clear that everything will run well.

I look forward to seeing samples and providing feedback. Please PM me with any questions.

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, excellent question, thanks for asking!

Find out more about SPS here. (I have also added that link to the first post.)

Cheers,
Dave

Hey,

Here is an idea that I had, I know its not exactly what you described, but just wanted to show you anyways I will also try and come up with something closer to what you specifed.

Thanks to the first two entrants.

Tivo - Yours has some nice features. It turns out that the logo does have to say "Society for Pediatric Sedation"; if necessary, "Safe and Sound" could be removed. Also, it would be nice if that figure somehow looked more like a child.

Sammyloski - Very colorful and cute! Unfortunately, the requirements listed in the first post are more necessary than I had thought, so please try something that matches them better.

Cheers,
Dave

fico - Thanks for entering! Your design is pretty simple (a good quality), and the words in reverse type show up well. Two comments: it is hard to read the P in SPS (legible would be better than fancy), and the preference is to have a patient (child) in the image, rather than a doctor. But this is a good start, and I look forward to seeing your next entry.

Oh, OK - I see that now (the one hair on the head ...). But they want a child who is in the position of a patient, not one who is "playing doctor" (though it was a cute idea!). Thanks again for your work.

weblord - you made a nice start, and your design is generally very appealing. Less overlap would be nice (the bottom of SPS overlapping on the words, and the bottom of the child overlapping on the top of SPS). Also, can you make the circle thing above the child look more like an MRI machine (a more vertical circle) and less like a hair dryer? I would love to see two versions of your next draft - one similar to the first draft, and one with the child image brought down and placed next to "SPS" (with the letters on one side and the child on the other, just so the logo isn't as tall). One last small request: I like your idea of the special "dot" for the i in "Society" - can you make it a star instead of a plus sign, and also use that star to dot the other i's? Thanks!

fico - a big improvement, good work! The lower row of images has an interesting design, with the bar and circle looking like a stethoscope, but I think we'll keep it simple and go with designs more like the top row. Since this may be printed at small sizes, there's not much room for a doctor and a patient in that little circle; please remove the doctor and make the patient larger. My wife (the doctor in the family) suggested that the bar above "SPS" could be the table the patient is lying on, so the circle could move to the left edge of the logo, with the patient's head entering it (but the patient's body extending along the table, well past the circle).

I hope my instructions are clear and not too picky - the designs I'm seeing are certainly moving in the right direction! Thanks for your work.

Last day of the contest! Three prizewinners will be declared after 5:00 U.S. Eastern time!

weblord - definitely better. My main comment is that the child and the MRI machine are both complex graphics, and this logo might be used at small sizes. Can you do simpler versions of them? For example, maybe just a curve that suggests an MRI machine, instead of an actual machine? Also, SPS and the child are both at the left, making the logo seem unbalanced. Which do you think would be better - moving both of them toward the middle, or leaving the SPS at the left and moving the child to the right? (He could be longer, to take up all of that space, if you think it's a good idea.) Thanks.

fico - you are getting there! The baby on the left is a good size, but he is on his belly and crawling, while a sedated baby would be on his back and still. Also, the triangle shape doesn't really stand for the right kind of medical equipment. The baby on the right is on his back, but he looks active; also, that is an intricate graphic, a much simpler baby would work better. I would recommend placing the circle at the left end of the logo, and having a simple graphic of a quiet baby (with his head toward the circle) next to it. The circle might have to be rotated (to look like an oval), so it is clear that the opening is facing toward the baby, not toward us. I really look forward to your next version! Thanks.
