Registrars charge too much for .NET (Formerly ".NET Scam!")

Did you know that registras pay $6.25 for .com domains but only $4.50 for .net domains. The only registra that I know of that passes on the savings to their customers is Moniker.com. (You could say that RegisterFly does with their $2.99 for year 1 but they sell .net domains for $6.50 to their resellers)

Here are the costs that a registra pays:
.com - $6.25
.net - $4.50
.org - $6.25*
.info - $6.00**
.biz - $5.55

*1st year cheaper for developing markets ($1.25)
**1st year cheaper ($1)

If more people were educated about the costs of domain registration then maybe we wouldn't be paying so much for .net and .biz renewals.

No type domain reseller that I know of receives .net domains for less than $6.49! Every domain reseller option that I know of pays the same for .net as .com

In the situation that the registra is receiving $6.50 per domain from the resellers, they are receiving $.25 for every .com and $2 for every .net. That is 8 times as much. This means that a lot of resellers are paying more for the .net registration than the .com registration despite that there are a lot more .com domains being registered.

This Sucks!

All my .net's are at Fabulous.com since they charge $4.75.

BTW, I wouldn't call ita scam. Anyone can price at whatever they want. Very few registrars make .net cheaper, even though it does cost them less.

Gotta make a buck somewhere... almost all domains sold are loss-leaders, might as well make a bit of back on .net's. So long as we're willing to pay, no foul play involved, eh?

It's good to know that fabulous is giving cheaper prices.

Just thought it was an interesting topic to discuss as a lot of people don't know.

I wrote to eNom in August 2005 when the prices were lowered requesting they lower our wholesale price. Here's the reply I got back,

eNom said:
Hello Ron,

Enom has no intention at this time of changing prices. While the .net pricing to us is going down, the ICANN fees are going up. So there is a direct offset to any savings we may have seen.

Some people pay $29+ for their registrations. Thats sortof blows 8x off the map. Mabey this will make you feel a little better about the few extra dollars

"The SEC filing revealed GoDaddy lost more than $11 million in 2005, with revenue of nearly $140 million. It also reported combined losses totaling more than $6 million from 2002-2004.

GoDaddy plans to use the money from the IPO for the repayment of about $7 million in debt, and for working capital and other general corporate purposes, including the expansion of the customer care and support, and research and development organizations, according to the filing. "

I know it's not a scam.

So why did you title your thread .net scam, other than getting nice attention,
to discuss a topic you seem to understand?

If you got a problem with those providers, take it up with them. Not here.

You don't like them making money off you? Look elsewhere or forget the whole
thing.

It's a reality not everyone understands this, much more care to. So tell them
the full story, then let them decide.

What more do you want?

I didn't expect to upset people with the title of the thread. Sorry to anyone who I have upset with this. I have withdrawn my references to scams.

I just used the the term scam because I thought it was a descriptive word which reflected the emotions I associate with my reactions to learning about how different the pricing was for .net and .com pricing for registras and feeling upset that registras didn't show this difference in their pricing. Even though it isn't a scam, it feels like a scam to me.

I don't enjoy debating about title's to threads. I'm more interested in the content of the discussion. I enjoy being involved in the discussions at Namepros. I appreciate what I have learned through this thread including the reaction to this title. I'll take more care in the future.
