Ok, I thought I found a really good ".US" name...I was on Domaintools, and typing in words into the suggestions field for it to generate available names. I was surprised to see this one word available in the ".US" field...

Because I know they're inaccurate sometimes, I opened a new window and checked in on Godaddy...same thing...available!

I "regged" it.....and a few minutes later got an error message from Godaddy saying it had already been regged...I checked the whois and it now says it's been regged since '02.

What?!?

for availability first check with moniker which will be more accurate.

Easy, it happens quite often.

I used to have "chance" to reg Traffic.co.uk at Domainsite, paid, and the domain shows in my account, WOW. But actually, the domain was not open to public, hence I can't manage it.

The worst thing is, Domainsite kept telling me that I am the owner of this domain, and they won't refund me the reg fee. After 5 emails which took about 20 days, Domainsite finally found their mistake and agreed to refund me which took extra 10 days. And there is NO apology at all. LOL ...

Yep, there's your answer!

Both GoDaddy and domaintools check availability via their database rather than in real-time. Domaintools are particularly slow in updating.

I have meet the same problems before. Godaddy is not always accurate. namepros is more accurate and convenient.

I think that Jay Westerdal (of Domaintools.com) explained on a thread on another forum that Domaintools.com runs the bulk checks against its local copy of the zone file. Some domain owners do not assign nameservers to their domains and do not appear in the zonefiles. The other registrars might be checking against the registry whois hence the difference.

It happened with me a while ago, I thought I had a peach of a domain!! Reg it then got an error message from GD!! To say I was Pi--ed off is an understatement!!

Always check on Moinker first now!!
