Post the whole quote.
I'm not a fan of needless forum bloat (I bloat forum databases with new sentences, not needlessly quoted ones .. lol) .. I only quote the relevant on context parts .. the link is there specifically for people who want to read the less relevant parts ...
First let me say that I'm not trying to be snarky .. even if @Eric Lyon's post was completely inaccurate, I did have a really good laugh at his comment!
That being said .. I say inaccurate because forum bloat has nothing to do with the way forum data is displayed (likes or anything else for that matter). That's more a bandwidth/server thing (which admittedly can be separate problematic issues as well).
Forum bloat is the actual size of content data in the forum database. Obviously the smaller it is the more efficient it is .. HOWEVER .. also equally obvious is that (unique) CONTENT IS KING ... so ironically the goal is to have as large a database full of great content as possible while being as efficient as possible.
Most would think that the Quote System is smart and just references the post or snippet of text in question and gives information to the current post of where to pull the text from. but it's unfortunately not that (and never realistically could in a way that would allow the current flexibility in quote usage).
The reality is that when you quote another post, whatever is in that quote is duplicated and added into the new post (effectively in the database twice .. or more if the same post is quoted repeatedly). So particularly for longer posts (such as my own .. lol), it can become a source of database inefficiency if someone quotes an entire post simply when addressing a smaller portion of it.
Obviously you don't want to take so much away so as to make that remaining content within the quote out of context, but as long as that isn't being done then in fact people should not necessarily quote posts completely, they instead should only quote the parts pertaining to the reply they are making.
PS .. I'm obviously also of the opinion that irony and humour are very justifiable uses of forum resources!
