Redirection

What is the best type of redirection to use?

Currently i am using the php way of doing

header('Location: http:....');

I tried to use .htaccess but it sends any index.php page somewhere else when i use this:

Redirect 301 /index.php http://www.gundam00episodes.com/forum/portal.php

Which was a bit annoying

I used .htaccess and it worked.
