hehe I am getting thoroughly confused with domains...anybody who can explain it to me in plain english would be much appreciated!

Ok, I have a couple of domains regged at both 123reg.co.uk and 1and1.co.uk I also have hosting at 123reg.co.uk. Today I signed up for hosting with servage, mainly because you can host multiple websites and have higher bandwidth etc. OK here is where I'm getting confused. I have transferred most of my domains over to my servage account, but I think it takes a while for it to update it, because the domains are still pointing to my 123reg hosting account. To transfer my domains, I unlocked the domains, changed the name servers to ns1.servage.net etc. then locked the domains again. Now, here is where I am confused. Are the domains still registered at 123reg and 1and1, or will they be completely transfered to servage. ie am I right in thinking the domains are still REGISTERED at 123reg and 1and1, and that they are simply HOSTED at servage?

Another thing is, I am planning on selling one of my domains from 1and1 and was just wondering if someone could outline the sales proceedure. ie I find someone who wants to buy my domain, they pay me (I believe paypal seems to be the most popular method) and then how would I transfer the domain to them? what info would they give me? and once they 'own' the domain it dissapears from my account at either 1and1 or 123reg.

I can pop a link on my site as a thankyou to anyone who can help me out :)

Many thanks,

Robin

ps. Sorry if this seems really noobish

I am also new but since no one experienced is replying I will try. I may be wrong though.

Your names are still with where you bought them. You have pointed them to another account. That is where they are "parked." Your control of the names is still with the place you bought them so you would go back to that company to point or "park" the names somewhere else.

It can take up to 48 hours for the names to be operational again after repointing them.

When you own a name you can point it to the company that hosts your website or you can park the name at a place that will share some of the income generated by people who type in your names.

I have found that parking income worth almost nothing. It certainly does not pay for the yearly reg fees. But it is interesting to see if anyone types in your names.

Maybe someone who really knows what they are talking about will read this and correct it.

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply - that's really helpful. I understand now the difference between hosting and registering a domain.
I also have tried parking a couple of domains and while they might occasionally get a view, they never get a click. Coming to think about it, if I get to a page full of links from a parking site, I never follow a link so I don't see why others would...

Thanks again,

Robin

Hi Robin,

If you change the nameservers on a domain then that name is still with the registrar in which you registered them with. In this case 123reg and 1and1. They are simply pointed to the host's servers with the nameservers but the names stay put.

Once you have a price agreed on with a buyer then they'll send you the payment via whatever method you both have agreed on (PayPal, Escrow, etc.). After you've verified that you have received the payment, then you should push the name to their account at the registrar. Most registrars have an easy push system where you can just push it to the buyer's account quickly and easily with just their user id.

Other registrars have a more difficult push process. I've never used 1and1 before, but I believe it's a pain in the rump to transfer a name to the new owner with them. You have to fill out a form and fax it to them. Here's their info in the FAQs, http://faq.oneandone.co.uk/search/go.php?t=e627403&q=owner

I'd stay away from them and go with one of the more popular registrars (Go Daddy, NameCheap, DomainSite, RegisterFly, etc) if you are going to be selling the names you register. Much easier on yourself and the buyer.

All the Best,
Chris
