A SAUDI woman who was kidnapped at knifepoint, gang-raped and then beaten by her brother was sentenced to 90 lashes - for a meeting a man who was not a relative, a newspaper reported.

In an interview with the Saudi Gazette, the 19-year-old said she was blackmailed a year ago into meeting a man who threatened to tell her family they were having a relationship outside wedlock, which is illegal in the ultra-conservative desert kingdom.

what a ridiculous law! meeting someone unrelated to you is illegal! :-/
...and sentencing that woman to 90 lashes is little short of disgraceful!

If they want to be sexist, let them. It seems to have worked for them so far, so why stop it?

Shes not being sentenced for the rape (as the other woman in the story seems to believe). She is being sentenced because she was alone with an unrelated man and that is illegal. If she had not been with him none of this would have happened. But 90 lashes... her body will be devastated after...

whats bad is that the other guys did not get longer sentances

Its really sad to see these disgusting laws they keep those countries. just 10 month jail term for a rape and 90 lashes for the rape victim.

I live in France...there are a lot of people that forget that in many countries, women aren't as free as I am. we are in the year 2007 and women are still considered as objects...
What scares me most is that it doesn't change: people always have a reason to destroy women: they invente laws and read religions in new ways to justify their actions.
it's horrible.

imo this isn't about sexism or persecution, it's about the country's traditions. We can no more say it's wrong to them than they can say any of our traditions are wrong. It may be morally wrong here, but not there.
