Another thread segway'd me into random thoughts.....

If there was a better extension for media sites, would you take it?

Let's say that ICANN put out a couple relevant new extensions not related to a country, so would be just a stand alone like mobi.

for example, .media.

Now, let's speculate further that this is a regular extension, just like mobi, info, net, etc. There wouldn't be any country to deal with. No premium fees, no conusion about renewels, etc etc.

Would, and this is opinion only, no need to fight or say "won't happen". Just give your thoughts about what would happen to tv.

I think personally that it would take a big bite out of tv. About the only reason for tv at that point would be for television shows. Personally, I also think it would be a huge one.

Invite your thoughts and comments. Please no trashing, just intellectual thoughts.

i think as time goes on, it is getting harder for new extensions to take hold. country code have a slight advantage as it might appeal to those who live tthere- except for small sinking islands- but that goes to show the strength in .tv as a stand alone.

i think we may see more country codes, but i think it is going to be hard for random extensions to stick- look at .name, .museum, .travel. ect.....

if i were able to secure one of the top 100 keywords, by some dumb luch the whole domainer world fell asleep all at once, i would by it for the sex.media novelty.

but i think new extensions, cheap or not, are going to be hard pressed

I think it would be hugely successful for the company that brought the extension out, in the sense that domainers who missed out on most of the great .TV keywords or who cannot afford to reg the 'premium' ones would scoop up gazillions of domains.

There would be a feeding frenzy for the top keywords, even if they forced it via a one time auctioning process.

Alternatively, you could argue that competition such as that might force .TV into reducing or removing the premium costs attached to the extension shortly before the announced release of the competing extension, as a way to kill the extension before it gains legs.

It would have to occur pretty darn quickly, though, before .TV is thoroughly ensconced as the online presence for media domains.

Well first off I do not think therewould be much success in a .media so have to disagree there. A success like .museum,.travel,.coop,.name ?

1) Media is an english word so anyplace that does not speak English oh 2/3 of the world would have no interest. TV universal.

2) Frank TV good Frank Media sucks, Houston.tv good Houston Media sucks again IMO

3) AN extension like that would be a sponsored tld I doubt the reg fees would be $7 let alone $20. Plus they would follow MTLD and get top dollar any new sponsor would be a fool to let their generics go for regular fee when they can follow MTLD to bigger prices.

Bottom line the best extension .com is always the way people will choose to go if they do not like .tv.

IMO .media or .video or .whatever you want to dream up is the least of any .tv investors worries.

If we video represents today's entertainment online, then what domain name extension would you buy to create a video related site if the Internet started today.

My pick is dot tv. Dot media would not fly for me.

I also believe that .tv is a more universal choice for media content. .media would not be well understood outside of English speaking countries. So much what we see on the Net today is media content already but not necessarily moving pictures.

The day will come where we can put together our daily programs, shows, news on the internet and display them on our big flat screen TV. The .tv extension will be the natural choice rather than .media.

A .web extension might stirr up things though...

.media or .video, etc. would be crap IMO. I think .tv is great, nice & short & straight to the point. Anything more than 4 letters, I don't think any extention would survive.
