I have found a domain that is a single word, and the last available extension is a .fm. The Estibot value is $14,000. With over 5,000,000 exact searches, a Overture type-in score of 1,602,000, and a CPC of $2.48. Everything looks good, but I'm not so sure about the extension. Would this be worth the high reg. fee? What are your thoughts? I am new to this, any input would be greatly appcreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

It's hard to say without knowing what the domain is. I have a couple of .fm domains and I bought them to put radio stations on, because aside from the country it stands for, most people think of radio like WebmasterRadio.fm, which is not my domain.

If you are thinking about investment, it would only make sense to me if the domain could be used by someone that wanted to put a radio station site on the domain, like talkradio.fm. But how big is that market? How many people have even heard about webmasterradio.fm, but they have been around for several years...?

Even with a super keyword I doubt you will make much from parking, so the only other thing is to develop it. When you talk about developing, you can generally make a really bad domain work better than just a parked domain.

Research all .fm sales, I personally doubt that any have sold for 14K.
Hint: there is no real market, it's another vanity TLD.

....fm is a ccTLD for the Federated States of Micronesia.
Just to clarify, it's not like .name or some of the other pretty useless, non-ccTLD domains.

To my mind this kind of domain name is not popular, so I can advice you to stay away from it.

Extension is irrelevant, if you are putting decent content onto the site. I say, GO FOR IT.

I totally agree.

I rather visit a site with this so called vanity extension that has a nice look and feel than visiting a .com site with advertising all over place.

I don't believe its a vanity extension. Its good for radio stations and presenters. It does serve a purpose.

Exactly. Example

cyber monday - Google Search

Ranking up there nicely in the 3rd spot, very competitive phrase. SE's care about serving up the most relevant results for any search, period, regardless of the extension.

Nice. No doubt one of the factors that helped it is that the domain name is the exact search term.
Shows that that the Google "geo penalty" against ccTLDs outside of their home "turf" is not too bad or at the very least that it can certainly be overcome.

If it's something like Radio.FM ...

It really depends if content + extension work together to make a good brand. Podcasts, sports, music, etc. all make sense with the .fm extension and it makes as good a brand as any alternate tld. That said, I only own two .fm's - basketball and videogames because those are the only two I could ever imagine building out (well I'd love to own baseball too, but it's flagged as a premium domain and it's outside my price range).
