Just wondering a few questions to any People from India or know a lot about the in tlds

What is more popular? .co.in or .in?
What will take off faster .in or .co.in domains? What are most people registering?
What do most Indian people type in? .co.in, .net.in, .org.in, .gen.in, or .ind.in?

How far along is India with the internet? what percentage of its population has access? With over 1 billion people in the country how many have internet access?

hey john here's my two cents on this..

the traffic on .in as well as co.in domains from what i have seen is pretty much the same... people in general because of the popularity of google (which redirects google.com to google.co.in here) might tend to type in .co.in more than .ins.. but recently a lot of new web projects and ventures are mushrooming with their brands in the .in TLD..
so i might say if you are looking at generic terms going for a .co.in might be better and other stuff like 3 or 4 character domains would do better in .in in terms of resale..

about the reach .. well internet is primarily used in the cities and metros where its used pretty much like any other country.. cities like almost all cities have 24 hour connectivity..

in terms of percent of the population using it actively there is still a long way to go.. though you can see cyber cafes mushrooming across even in smaller towns ..the number of households having PCs at home is still less..

but we are talking about a population of over a billion here.. meaning even a 5% reach is over 50 million people..

hope this helps.. i'd suggest you do a bit of research and not just take our word for it though... india has its on way of working :)

I normally take .co.in as they are popular and my registrar does them cheaper. But I agree for short words .in makes sense, also for words that don't make much sense in an Indian context (WyomingFalls or such).
