Hi everyone,

I am running my computer on Windows XP
and am having a problem.

Due to some reason I am not able to play .avi files.
I have a good codec pack. (K-lite codec pack)

I am able to play all kind of files except .avi I can hear the sound
but can not see the video.

Could someone please help me.

Ps. very strange my girlfriend is using Windows Vista (just got a new laptop

Download G-Spot to find out what codec the video needs.

Or, you can just download VLC Player. I've yet to find a video that this program CAN'T play! :p

Like Slider said, use VLC Player. "It plays anything". ;)

As for your problem, is it for every .avi file, or is it .avi files downloaded from a certain site?

VLC Player makes problems for .wmv files. I don't know if they fixed that, but you might have problems with them in FF if you use it.

or you may also try media player classic

Try winamp or maybe install divX codec with player. I use k-lite codec pack to sometimes it gives this kind of errors still its one of the best.

Its every .avi file on the computer
No problem with .mpg's , .wmv etc...

G-Spot just gives you information about the video file. Just open up G-Spot, load the .avi file you're trying to play and it will tell you everything about that file. Simply look at what video codec the file uses and then use Google to find the download link for it.

Good luck!

Sounds like the program that could really help me.

I had placed the .avi file i wanted to open on my external HD
I ll get that after my dinner. (copy the file) to my laptop and then open it
with G-spot.

I will post the result of G-spot here.

Thanks for all the help guys ( and thanks for the great advice slider rep added) I hope I will find the solution.
