Well,
PremierLeague is a general term, already in use with many sporting events including Rugby, Football, and Cricket.

I am sure that the word "English Premier League" or collectively "EPL" is a TM.

Well surely the guy was hoping it would have high value because of its possible use as a website connected with the (English) premier league. I don't know, but 'premier league' itself might not be a trademark but perhaps if the domain was developed into a site about the EPL, then it might become a trademark infringement. Same with regards to the Indian premier league.
