I have previously transferred out domains from powerpipe succesfully however yesterday I initiated a transfer of my last domain with them only to find that the domain was locked. On my control panel for the domain there is no feature to unlock it so I started searching the site.

I found a support link to request the domain to be unlocked as

A "registrar lock" is a security measure that prevents a criminal from fraudulently transferring your name away from your account at PowerPipe.com. All domains registered at PowerPipe.com are automatically supplied with a security lock.

No problem and good security however the email I received told a different story:-

If you wish to transfer one or more of your domains to a different registrar, please print and mail the following document to PowerPipe.com with the applicable service(s) fees:

The document in question has to be mailed to them via snail mail along with a check and a photocopy of either my drivers license or passport and also has to be notarised.

The applicable service fee is $7.99 - more than my renewal fee with my registrar of choice.

Get real Powerpipe - don't get the hump and hang on to our domains just because you operate an inferior service and people want to transfer away from you - wise up and make your service more user friendly and appealing - that way people will want to stay with you!!

I have emailed them for an explanation as to why they are effectively 'ransoming' my domain - has anybody else had similar experiences with them or other registrars?

I heard about this before. I though they took so much heat they rescinded the charges. I 'm pretty sure I saw the Powerpipe owner post an apology on another forum. In addition I just bought a name last week from someone who had it there and it didn't cost anything to transfer to me - and was all done electronicly.

I saw the same article they replied to. Just because someone took advantage of the netsol offer and transferred 4000 names from them they decided to lock down transfers. They should wake up and smell the coffee, these are not their names to do what they wish with. They belong to other people

oops - went away for a while and forgot to update everybody on this one.

I received a nice email apologising about the misunderstanding and they advised me that the charge is only valid if they have difficulty in verifying contact details as being valid.

We got the domain unlocked and succesfully transferred out last week.
