Portuguese companies prefer to use .pt instead of .com

Here in Portugal, most of the companies use .COM domains instead of the .PT because of the restrictions of this ccTLD.
:)

actually that's a lie, most companies own the .pt because it gives the sense of security to their clients since to own a .pt you would need to be a registered company or be a tm.
now if some companies redirects the .pt to a .com that's another story, but they still own the .pt .
after 1st may ppl will be confused since they always associated a .pt with "this company is legit" that's why i don't see the opening of .pt with good eyes.

also about your main question...yes we use .com in some situations:
- when we can't buy a .pt ( not a registered company )
- you couldn't afford one (since .pt was very expensive at start )
- your main target isn't he portuguese population

there may be more but atm i don't recall any.

I think the Portuguese companies like .PT much more!

...more than likely you're probably right, but that doesn't keep them away from other extensions at any rate. There's too much diversity involved and they're not going to risk cutting into their profits just because of an extension...

Here in Brazil .com.br is the norm. The domain registro.br is where you can find the responsible organisation for registering Brazilian domains, but you need a personal or company tax id to register one (I've got a Brazilian tax id :)

I've seen a couple of big media corp own .com. Example, globo.com, r7.com and UOL.com
