In response to the thread about setting a minimum prize level, I decided to set up this poll as suggested by another member. We are in a community that works like a real market. Lets have a community meeting! What do you feel is a fair rate for a vector logo design? How much work and time do you put in for your specific price ranges? Just give everyone a little feedback to help the contest holders set fair prices! Maybe this will also help with the spamming of contests where people post "this is way to low for a logo!".

$30-$40
But - It all depends on the logo. Each one is different, each contest holder has the right to say how they want it - which effects the time you will spend on it, and the quality. Some are more, some are less. I think $30-$40 is a good range for a basic logo.

Guidelines for Contest Holders

Need a logo, template or stationary designed? Post your contest here and let others compete for the prize. In order to post a contest in the Contests category, you must abide by the following rules.

1. You must give feedback to the entries you reject on a regular basis, to give entrants the chance to improve their entry.
2. A minimum price has been set on all contests. The prize money for your contest must be at or above this minimum price. The minimum price depends on which of the following brackets your design task falls into:

1st tier - Minimum: $150
Full page template with graphics and code
Forum skin with graphics and templates
2nd tier - Minimum: $100
Page template with graphics only
Forum skin with graphics only
Complete identity package (logo, business card, letterhead)
3rd tier - Minimum: $50
Logo, button, icon or banner
All other tasks

Contests falling short of these price guides will be removed.
3. You are not allowed to run the same competition simultaneously on another website nor are you allowed to link to a contest elsewhere. Contest entries must be accepted in the SitePoint Marketplace only.
4. Once the contest is finished, it is your responsibility to declare the winner publicly (if there is a winner). You will need to contact the winner privately to arrange the payment of their prize.
5. It is your responsibility to describe in which format you require the work to be submitted.
6. Contests that contain adult content are not acceptable based on the Sitepoint general rules.
7. You may only run one contest per listing - by this we mean that you may ask entrants to design a number of elements that comprise a single coherenet whole. For example you may run a contest for a site design with logo - you may select a winning logo and a different winning design only if you have declared you reserve the right to do this in your initial post from the start of the contest. However you may not run multiple contests within a listing - for example asking for 2 designs for 2 different sites, asking for a logo for one site and a design for another etc.
8. If the contest holder does not post for an entire week, and there are entries requiring feedback, the contest will be considered abandoned. The contest may be closed, and action may be taken to prevent the contest holder from holding more contests in the future. Entrants should report contests that fall into this category to an advisor.
9. The contest holder may cancel a contest, but when doing so he must give a reason for cancelling the contest, and provide feedback on every entry that was submitted up until the time the contest was cancelled.
10. Domain name suggestion contests, in which the contest holder asks entrants to suggest an appropriate and available domain name, are not allowed.

The community moderators will apply these guidelines acording to their discretion - if you are unsure of anything or feel your contest may fall within a grey area please contact an advisor before you post your contest - otherwise you risk your contest being removed.

SitePoint is not a party to monetary transactions between Marketplace members and while we'll attempt to ensure the contests are fair and legitimate, SitePoint cannot accept responsibility for any losses or damages resulting from mishaps on the part of a contest holder or entrant such as non-payment or fraud, or action taken by a moderator such as the closing of a contest.

The SitePoint Marketplace is a public forum. This means that listings and their contents can be seen by all visitors, including search engine spiders. As a result your contest may be indexed by search engines and included in search results. Please keep this in mind when posting any information which you consider to be sensitive or do not want used in this manner.

If anybody sees a contest within the Contests section which is not following the guidelines, they should use the 'Report Bad Post' link which appears next to each post. Moderators will be notified and respond accordingly.
Copyright Issues

All contest holders and participants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the issue of copyright, and how it relates to using other people's work or ideas without permission.

SitePoint or its moderators cannot enforce the rights of any of its members under copyright, and unfortunately as we are not qualified we can't offer legal advice related to any issues between members.

If you feel that an original creation by you has been used improperly, in a way that violates your rights, it is your responsibility to pursue this yourself should you wish to do so. Do not involve the SitePoint moderators in your dispute by posting your grievances publicly in a contest; the posts will only be removed and you will receive a warning.

The following page is a great starting point for anybody wishing to learn more about their rights under copyright, and contains many relevant links.

Guidelines for Participants

1. Only those wishing to enter a contest may reply to listings in the Contests category.
2. Negative comments or criticism of the contest holder, the way in which the contest is conducted, or any other entrants are strictly not allowed. If you require clarification about a detail of a contest or feedback on your design, you should ask it in a constructive manner and without criticism.
3. Members who violate these guidelines by posting negative comments about a contest holder, contest, or any other participant may be punished by having their posts removed, receiving a warning from an advisor or being banned permanently from the forums and Marketplace.
4. A screenshot of each entry must be posted to the contest for other entrants to see. 'Teaser' entries and privately submitted entries are NOT permitted.
5. All entries must be your own work. If you use material from another source, such as stock photography, you MUST get permission from the original author before using it in your work AND you must give them credit when you post your work. For an obvious rip/copy/plagarise will result in an immediate 1 month ban (at the staff's discretion)
6. When quoting other people's post in this category please do NOT include other people's work in the quote itself. It takes up too much space and makes it too hard to follow who posted what.

How can I protect myself as a contest holder?

Do your homework (this is called due diligence). Make sure the person who entered your contest is the legal owner of the entry. Check the user's previous posts to determine the user's standing in the community. Check to see if the entrant has entered other contests at SitePoint before, and if there were any problems. You do not need to declare a winner until you are certain that you can trust the winning entrant. You may elect not to declare a winner in the case that you are not comfortable with any entries or entrants.

Consider using an escrow service like Escrow.com for the transferring of prize money.
How can I protect myself as an entrant?

Check the contest holder's previous posts to determine the contest holder's standing in the community prior to entering any contest. Check to see if the contest holder has held other contests at SitePoint before, and check with the winning entrants to see if there were any problems with payment.

Ask the contest holder as many questions as you need to about the terms of their contest and about what they require until you fully understand the requirements.

Check that the prize money being offered is fair for the work you are doing, taking into account the possibility you will not win it. You might want to make sure the prize money is enough to compensate you for the contests you enter which you didn't win.

Note: if you think the prize money is too low, do NOT post in the contest complaining about it. You should contact the contest holder directly or, if you believe they are breaking the guidelines by offering less than the minimum prize money, contact an advisor using the 'Report Bad Post' icon.

Judging by the votes so far, things are about right as they are. The more you offer, the more designers you'll have interested, but there are members interested in the 'budget' contests too.

sorry o/t what if you dont like any of the designs made?

another thing ive noticed, it doesnt really matter if you offer more money, it doesnt seem any more time is spent into making the banner

i had a comp for $100+ and i thought all the entrants were poor, im not a graphic designer but i could have come up with better with the no experience and talents i got

but then i see some $15-$20 contests and some of the work i think is really bloody good and a lot more time would have been spent on this
